How to use our Lease-End Wear Charges vs Repair Before Return Calculator

  1. Add each lease-end damage item, then enter the lessor charge and the repair quote in its own field. Use Add damage item for more rows.
  2. Include sales tax and shop fees in each repair quote so both choices use amounts you would actually pay.
  3. Open Advanced options only if needed. Enter a confirmed waiver, or enter all three mileage fields to estimate an excess-mile charge.
  4. Click Calculate and read Repair-first cost change: a positive amount means repair first costs less; a negative amount means leaving the listed wear costs less.
  5. Sanity-check that All-in repair cost before return and Chargeable wear cost if left unrepaired match your documents, then use the total-return amounts only for planning the full bill.

Definitions

Lessor charge: The amount the leasing company says it may charge if a listed item is returned unrepaired.

All-in repair quote: The full amount you expect to pay a repair provider, including quoted tax and shop fees.

Chargeable wear: Vehicle condition the lessor treats as outside normal wear under its lease standards. Standards and charges vary by lease agreement. [1]

Wear waiver: Contract coverage that may reduce eligible chargeable-wear charges. It does not automatically cover every item.

Excess-mile rate: The contract charge for each mile above the total lease mileage allowance.

Disposition or turn-in fee: A lease-end fee that may apply when you return the vehicle instead of buying it.

Repair-first cost change: Remaining chargeable wear after the waiver minus the all-in repair cost. A positive number favors repairing first.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a repair estimate before tax or shop fees in Damage items and quotes ($ per item).
Fix: Use the all-in amount you would pay so it can be fairly compared with the lessor charge.

Mistake: Treating the Confirmed wear waiver amount ($) as guaranteed coverage.
Fix: Enter only coverage you confirmed remains available for these items after checking exclusions and limits.

Mistake: Filling in only Allowed total lease miles (miles) and Contract excess-mile rate ($ per mile).
Fix: Enter all three mileage fields, including Projected odometer miles at return (miles), or leave all three blank.

Mistake: Counting a Disposition or turn-in fee ($) as a benefit of repairing damage.
Fix: Keep it in the total-return plan only; it does not change Repair-first cost change.

Mistake: Assuming Other non-repair lease-end charges ($) will disappear after a repair.
Fix: Include only known balances for planning, because they are added to both return choices.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator uses the charges and quotes you enter. It does not decide whether an item qualifies as normal wear or chargeable wear under your lease.
  • A waiver is applied only to listed wear charges and is capped at those charges. It cannot reduce excess mileage, a disposition fee, or other account balances.
  • Mileage is estimated only when Allowed total lease miles (miles), Projected odometer miles at return (miles), and Contract excess-mile rate ($ per mile) are all entered. Projected mileage can change before turn-in.
  • Estimated total return cost after repairs and Estimated total return cost without repairs are planning totals, not invoices. Taxes, unpaid amounts, credits, inspections, and later findings can change the final bill.
  • Repair work may need to meet the lessor's requirements, and a repair receipt may matter. Check the lease agreement and keep itemized documents.

Methodology

Comparison math

The calculator adds the lessor charges from every damage item and separately adds the all-in repair quotes.

listed wear charges = add all lessor charges

all-in repair cost before return = add all repair quotes

A confirmed waiver reduces only the listed wear charges. The chargeable-wear amount cannot fall below $0.

chargeable wear cost if left unrepaired = max(0, listed wear charges - confirmed wear waiver amount)

The main comparison subtracts the repair total from the remaining chargeable-wear total.

repair-first cost change = chargeable wear cost if left unrepaired - all-in repair cost before return

A positive cost change means repair first costs less. A negative cost change means paying the remaining listed wear charges costs less.

Optional return planning

When all mileage fields are provided, excess miles are miles above the total allowance. The calculator adds the resulting mileage charge, disposition fee, and other non-repair charges to both choices, so they do not change the repair decision.

excess miles = max(0, projected odometer miles at return - allowed total lease miles)

estimated excess-mile charge = excess miles * contract excess-mile rate

estimated total return cost after repairs = repair cost + excess-mile charge + disposition fee + other non-repair charges

estimated total return cost without repairs = remaining wear cost + excess-mile charge + disposition fee + other non-repair charges

Worked example

If listed wear charges are $930 and all-in repair quotes total $490, with no waiver, the repair-first cost change is $930 - $490 = $440. Repairing first costs $440 less. If a $100 confirmed waiver applies, remaining wear becomes $830 and repairing first costs $340 less.

Calculation choices

The calculator accepts only nonnegative dollar amounts. Mileage inputs must be completed together or left blank. It treats blank optional fees and waiver amounts as $0. Lease agreements can classify wear, coverage, fees, and repair documentation differently, so use the lessor's written terms and inspection results for the final decision.
