How to use our Car Key Replacement Locksmith vs Dealer Total Cost Calculator
- Enter the All-in locksmith quote ($) from the locksmith, including the key or fob, programming, travel, fees, and tax.
- Enter the All-in dealer key quote ($) and confirm that it includes all dealer charges you expect to pay.
- Choose an answer for Does the dealer need the vehicle on-site?. If yes, enter your out-of-pocket Tow cost to dealer ($), or enter 0 if coverage makes towing free.
- Click Calculate to see both full costs and the signed difference. A positive dealer-minus-locksmith amount means the dealer costs more; a negative amount means the dealer costs less.
- Sanity-check that both provider quotes cover the same job, especially the key or fob, cutting, programming, travel, labor, fees, and tax.
Definitions
All-in quote: The full price for one key-replacement job, including every charge you expect to pay.
Out-of-pocket cost: The amount you personally pay after any coverage, discount, or benefit.
Dealer needs the vehicle on-site: The dealer requires the vehicle to be brought in for the replacement process. In this calculator, that choice adds the tow cost to the dealer route.
Signed difference: A subtraction result that can be positive or negative. For Dealer total minus locksmith total, positive means the dealer costs more and negative means the dealer costs less.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a locksmith price that excludes programming or a mobile-service fee in All-in locksmith quote ($).
Fix: Ask for one final out-of-pocket quote, then replace the entry with that amount.
Mistake: Using a dealer parts-only price for All-in dealer key quote ($).
Fix: Confirm whether cutting, programming, labor, diagnostic fees, and tax are included before entering the quote.
Mistake: Choosing no for Does the dealer need the vehicle on-site? without asking the dealer.
Fix: Ask whether the vehicle must be present for programming or key matching, then select the dealer's answer.
Mistake: Entering the tow company's full price instead of your share in Tow cost to dealer ($).
Fix: Enter only what you will pay after roadside-assistance or insurance benefits. Enter 0 if you pay nothing.
Mistake: Treating a negative Dealer total minus locksmith total ($) as an error.
Fix: A negative value means the dealer's full cost is lower than the locksmith's full cost.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This calculator compares only the quotes and tow amount you enter. It does not estimate local prices or verify that a quote is reasonable.
- It treats each provider quote as a one-time, all-in charge. Unlisted fees, taxes, key deposits, after-hours charges, or later repairs can change the actual bill.
- The tow cost is included only when you select that the dealer needs the vehicle on-site. Enter 0 if your roadside-assistance or insurance benefit covers towing in full.
- A lower total does not prove that a provider can make the key. Confirm compatibility, programming access, availability, and required ownership documents for the exact vehicle and key or fob.
- This comparison does not cover non-price factors such as travel time, appointment availability, warranty terms, or the risk of needing additional vehicle service.
Methodology
Calculation
The locksmith route uses the all-in locksmith quote exactly as entered. The dealer route uses the dealer all-in quote and adds towing only if the dealer needs the vehicle on-site.
locksmith total = all-in locksmith quote
dealer total = all-in dealer key quote + tow cost when the dealer needs the vehicle on-site
dealer total minus locksmith total = dealer total - locksmith total
Worked example
If the locksmith quote is $275, the dealer quote is $450, and the dealer requires the vehicle with a $125 out-of-pocket tow, the locksmith total is $275 and the dealer total is $575. The dealer total minus locksmith total is $300, so the dealer route costs $300 more.
Calculation scope
Money entries must be $0 or more and may include a leading dollar sign or correctly placed comma separators. When the dealer does not need the vehicle on-site, the tow entry is hidden and excluded from the dealer total. The result compares price only; it assumes each entered quote covers the same replacement job and has been confirmed for the exact vehicle and key.
