Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This converter uses the US liquid gallon. It does not use the imperial gallon or the US dry gallon.
- Rounding changes only the displayed value. The internal math uses the full factor before rounding the answer.
- Very tiny nonzero volumes can display as 0 if "Round answer to (decimal places)" is set too low.
- The cubic feet value is a volume check, not a container recommendation. Real containers can need extra space, wall thickness, or freeboard.
- The math treats volume as exact unit conversion only. It does not adjust for temperature, pressure, evaporation, packing, or material shrinkage.
- Extremely large entries may be blocked so the page can avoid unsafe or unreadable number displays.
Methodology
How the conversion is calculated
The converter uses the US liquid gallon basis, where 1 gallon equals 231 cubic inches, and a cubic yard contains 36 * 36 * 36 = 46,656 cubic inches [2].
cubic_yards = gallons * 231 / 46656
For the opposite direction, the converter uses the reciprocal factor.
gallons = cubic_yards * 46656 / 231
The supporting cubic feet value uses the fact that 1 cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
cubic_feet = cubic_yards * 27
Displayed values are rounded after the exact conversion is finished.

Mini-example
If the starting amount is 1,000 gallons, the cubic-yard result is 1000 * 231 / 46656 = 4.951131687... yd3. Rounded to 6 decimal places, the displayed converted volume is 4.951132 yd3. The same volume in cubic feet is 4.951131687... * 27 = 133.680556 ft3.
Input handling
The calculator strips commas and spaces from "Starting amount" before parsing, so 1,000 and 1000 are treated the same. A blank optional rounding field uses the safe default of 6 decimal places, while a filled rounding value must be a whole number from 0 to 12.
