How to use our Cubic Yards to Gallons Converter
- Choose What do you want to convert?: cubic yards to gallons, or gallons to cubic yards.
- Enter Volume to convert (starting unit); decimals and commas are okay, such as 0.5 or 1,250.
- Pick Gallon type: US liquid gallon, US dry gallon, or Imperial gallon.
- Select Calculate, then read Converted volume first and Factor used if you need to show your work.
- Sanity-check the answer: 1 yd^3 is about 202 US liquid gallons, about 174 US dry gallons, or about 168 Imperial gallons.

Definitions
Cubic yard (yd^3): A volume equal to a cube that is 1 yard long, 1 yard wide, and 1 yard tall.
Gallon type: The gallon definition used in the conversion. US liquid, US dry, and Imperial gallons are not the same size.
US liquid gallon: The common US gallon for liquids, defined as 231 cubic inches.
US dry gallon: A US dry-volume gallon, defined here as 268.8025 cubic inches.
Imperial gallon: A British gallon used in Imperial measurement systems, defined here as 4.54609 liters.
Factor used: The exact multiplier for the selected direction and gallon type, such as gallons per yd^3 or yd^3 per gallon.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Leaving Volume to convert (starting unit) blank.
Fix: Enter a number, even 0, before you calculate.
Mistake: Typing words or mixed units into Volume to convert (starting unit) , such as 3 yards or 10 gal.
Fix: Type only the number; choose the starting unit with What do you want to convert? .
Mistake: Using the wrong Gallon type for the job.
Fix: Use US liquid gallon for most US water, fuel, pool, and tank volumes; use US dry gallon only for dry volume, and Imperial gallon for Imperial gallon measurements.
Mistake: Reading Converted volume without checking the direction.
Fix: Confirm What do you want to convert? so you know whether the result is in gallons or yd^3.
Mistake: Copying Factor used from one direction into the opposite direction.
Fix: Use the factor shown after calculation; gallons per yd^3 and yd^3 per gallon are different numbers.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The converter treats the entered number as a volume only. It does not adjust for temperature, container shape, material density, or liquid expansion.
- The default gallon type is US liquid gallon, but the selected Gallon type controls the result. A different gallon type gives a different answer.
- Negative values are allowed as signed math conversions, such as a volume change or correction. A negative result does not mean a physical container has negative volume.
- Very large values are formatted for reading, so the displayed decimal places may be rounded even though the calculation uses more precision internally.
- This tool does not convert weight, mass, or flow rate. For example, gallons of water and gallons per minute are different kinds of measurements.
Methodology
How the conversion is done
The calculator first chooses a gallon-per-cubic-yard factor from the selected Gallon type. Then it either multiplies or divides based on What do you want to convert?.
US liquid gallons per yd^3 = 46656 / 231 = 201.97402597402598
US dry gallons per yd^3 = 46656 / 268.8025 = 173.5698142688405
Imperial gallons per yd^3 = 46656 / (4.54609 / 0.016387064) = 168.1785573941563
converted_gallons = cubic_yards * gallons_per_cubic_yard
converted_cubic_yards = gallons / gallons_per_cubic_yard
Where the constants come from
One yard is 36 inches, so one cubic yard is 36 * 36 * 36 = 46,656 cubic inches. The US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, which gives about 201.974 US liquid gallons per cubic yard; this matches the common cubic-yard to US liquid gallon conversion factor [2]. The US dry gallon factor uses 268.8025 cubic inches per dry gallon. The Imperial gallon factor converts 4.54609 liters per Imperial gallon into cubic inches using 0.016387064 liters per cubic inch.
Mini-example
If What do you want to convert? is cubic yards to gallons, Volume to convert (starting unit) is 3, and Gallon type is US dry gallon, the calculator uses 173.5698142688405 dry gallons per yd^3.
converted_volume = 3 * 173.5698142688405 = 520.7094428065216 US dry gallons
For the reverse direction, the calculator uses the reciprocal factor. For example, 100 US liquid gallons divided by 201.97402597402598 equals 0.49511316872427985 yd^3.
