Bathroom Lighting Calculator

Estimate bathroom lumens, bulb count, and a practical split between room lighting and mirror lighting.

Switching units converts the current length and width, so the physical room and result stay the same.

How to use our Bathroom Lighting Calculator

  1. Choose Feet or Metres, then enter Bathroom length and Bathroom width using wall-to-wall floor measurements.
  2. Choose Main bathroom use, then enter Lumens per bulb or fixture from the bulb or fixture label.
  3. Open Advanced options if you want to adjust Ceiling height, Wall and tile color, Extra light buffer, Vanity or mirror share, or Number style.
  4. Select Calculate and read Total lumens to shop for first, then use Number of bulbs or fixtures for a simple buying count.
  5. Sanity-check the result: if the vanity number is tiny for a grooming bathroom, raise Vanity or mirror share or choose Bright grooming or makeup.

Definitions

Lumens: A measure of light output. More lumens means a brighter bulb or fixture [2].

Foot-candle: Light landing on a surface, measured as 1 lumen per square foot.

Lux: Another light-on-a-surface unit. This calculator uses 1 foot-candle = 10.76391 lux.

Target brightness: The planned light level for the selected Main bathroom use, shown in foot-candles and lux.

Vanity or mirror share: The percent of total lumens aimed near the sink, mirror, or grooming area.

Extra light buffer: Extra percent added for shade covers, dirt, aging, and small layout losses.

Ceiling height multiplier: A simple adjustment that raises the estimate for tall ceilings and slightly lowers it for low ceilings.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering watts in Lumens per bulb or fixture.
Fix: Use the lumen rating on the package, because watts are power use, not brightness.

Mistake: Measuring only the open walking space for Bathroom length or Bathroom width.
Fix: Measure the full bathroom floor area you want lit, wall to wall.

Mistake: Leaving Main bathroom use on Powder room or soft light for a makeup or shaving space.
Fix: Choose Bright grooming or makeup when the mirror area needs stronger task light.

Mistake: Setting Vanity or mirror share too low and planning all light from the ceiling.
Fix: Use Suggested vanity or mirror lumens to plan light near the face, not only overhead.

Mistake: Ignoring Wall and tile color in a dark bathroom.
Fix: Choose Mostly dark colors so Total lumens to shop for includes the dark-surface adjustment.

Mistake: Treating Number of bulbs or fixtures as the only possible layout.
Fix: Use it as a shopping count, then split the actual fixtures between Suggested room light lumens and Suggested vanity or mirror lumens.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This is a quick planning estimate, not a full photometric lighting design.
  • The target brightness presets are planning values, not building code requirements.
  • Fixture shape, shade opacity, beam angle, mirror size, and exact fixture placement can change how bright the room feels.
  • Dark surfaces, tall ceilings, and covered fixtures can make a bathroom feel dim even when the lumen total looks correct.
  • Very large, long, divided, or unusual bathrooms may need more than a simple room-and-vanity split.
  • The calculator uses lumens from bulb or fixture labels. Actual light at the counter can be lower after losses.
  • Color temperature and color rendering are not calculated, even though they affect how bathroom lighting looks.

Methodology

Core calculation

The calculator starts with bathroom floor area, then multiplies by a target brightness preset. Foot-candles work directly with square feet because 1 foot-candle means 1 lumen per square foot. If you choose Metres, each entered dimension is converted with feet = metres / 0.3048 before the same calculation. The result also shows area in square metres, so switching units does not change the physical room or recommended lumens.

area_sq_ft = room_length_ft * room_width_ft

target_fc = preset value from Main bathroom use

The presets are 20 foot-candles for Powder room or soft light, 30 foot-candles for Everyday full bathroom, and 50 foot-candles for Bright grooming or makeup. Bathroom mirror lighting is task lighting, meaning it helps with a specific task that needs more light than general lighting [1].

Adjustment factors

Ceiling height and surface color adjust the estimate before the buffer is applied.

adjustment = ceiling_multiplier * surface_multiplier * (1 + planning_buffer_percent / 100)

Ceiling multipliers are 0.95 for low, 1.00 for standard, and 1.15 for tall. Surface multipliers are 0.95 for mostly light colors, 1.00 for mixed or medium colors, and 1.15 for mostly dark colors.

Main outputs

total_lumens = area_sq_ft * target_fc * adjustment

light_count = ceiling(total_lumens / lumens_per_light)

vanity_light_lumens = total_lumens * vanity_share_percent / 100

room_light_lumens = total_lumens - vanity_light_lumens

target_lux = target_fc * 10.76391

The light count rounds up only when needed. If the division is already a whole number, the calculator does not add an extra bulb or fixture.

Mini example

For an 8 ft by 5 ft everyday bathroom with 800 lumens per light, standard ceiling height, mixed surfaces, a 10 percent buffer, and a 45 percent vanity share: area is 40 sq ft, target brightness is 30 foot-candles, and adjustment is 1.10.

total_lumens = 40 * 30 * 1.10 = 1320 lm

light_count = ceiling(1320 / 800) = 2

vanity_light_lumens = 1320 * 45 / 100 = 594 lm

room_light_lumens = 1320 - 594 = 726 lm

The result means you would shop for about 1320 total lumens, then aim about 594 lumens near the mirror and about 726 lumens toward general room lighting.
