How to use our Coolant Change Cost Calculator
- Choose Who is doing the job?, then pick the Service type that matches your quote or plan.
- Enter Cooling system capacity in gallons and choose the Coolant product you will buy.
- If a shop is doing the job, enter Labor charge; if you are doing it yourself, switch to DIY so labor is not counted.
- Open Advanced options if you need to change Coolant price, Sales tax estimate, Coupon or discount, fees, or the concentrate mix.
- Check whether Coolant to buy and the Coolant amount note make sense before you compare the Estimated total cost with a shop quote or store receipt.

Definitions
Coolant: The engine fluid that helps control heat. It is often a mix of antifreeze and water.
Drain-and-fill: A basic service that drains part of the old coolant and refills the system. Some old fluid usually stays inside the engine and heater core.
Coolant exchange or flush: A service meant to replace most of the old coolant, often using more fluid than a simple drain-and-fill.
Flush with cleaner: A flush that also uses a cleaning product or extra rinse step. The calculator treats it as a full replacement unless you enter an override.
Cooling system capacity: The total amount of coolant the vehicle's cooling system holds when full, measured here in gallons.
50/50 premixed coolant: Coolant already mixed with water and ready to pour, if it matches your vehicle's required coolant type.
Concentrate: Full-strength antifreeze that must be mixed with distilled water before the final fill.
Antifreeze part for concentrate: The percent of the final mix that comes from concentrate, such as 50 for a half antifreeze and half water mix.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering quarts in Cooling system capacity.
Fix: Convert quarts to gallons first by dividing by 4, then enter that number in Cooling system capacity.
Mistake: Leaving Labor charge in the form when Who is doing the job? is DIY.
Fix: Pick DIY under Who is doing the job? so Labor charge is ignored and Labor cost used becomes $0.
Mistake: Choosing Concentrate plus distilled water but not checking Antifreeze part for concentrate.
Fix: Use 50 in Antifreeze part for concentrate unless your owner's manual or coolant label calls for a different safe mix.
Mistake: Using Coolant replaced override for a guess instead of leaving it blank.
Fix: Leave Coolant replaced override blank unless the shop or service manual gives a better percent.
Mistake: Putting a percent as a decimal in Sales tax estimate.
Fix: Enter 6 for 6 percent in Sales tax estimate, not 0.06.
Mistake: Forgetting Shop supplies fee, Coolant disposal fee, or Coupon or discount when checking a quote.
Fix: Copy each separate quote line into Shop supplies fee, Coolant disposal fee, and Coupon or discount before you compare totals.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This is a cost estimate. It does not know your exact vehicle, dealer price, local labor rate, or shop menu package.
- The default replaced amount is 50 percent for Drain-and-fill and 100 percent for Coolant exchange or flush and Flush with cleaner. Actual fluid used can differ by vehicle and procedure.
- The calculator does not verify coolant chemistry, color, or OEM approval. Use the coolant type required by your owner's manual or repair data.
- Coolant to buy and Distilled water to buy are rounded up to whole gallon jugs, so the exact fluid poured may be less than the shopping amount.
- Sales tax estimate is applied to the after-discount subtotal. Real tax rules may treat labor, parts, fees, or coupons differently.
- Used coolant can be hazardous to people, pets, and the environment. Follow local recycling or disposal rules instead of dumping it.
- If Coupon or discount is larger than all entered costs, Estimated total cost and Fees, tax, and discounts can be negative. That means the entered discount is bigger than the entered charges, not that the shop pays you automatically.
Methodology
How the estimate is built
The calculator first estimates how much coolant service fluid is needed from Cooling system capacity and Service type. If Coolant replaced override is blank, the default is 50 percent for Drain-and-fill and 100 percent for Coolant exchange or flush or Flush with cleaner.
replaced_percent = override_percent if override_percent is not blank else default_percent
replaced_gallons = system_capacity_gal * replaced_percent / 100
For 50/50 premixed coolant, the shopping amount is rounded up to whole gallon jugs, and no distilled water is added.
coolant_to_buy_gal = ceil(replaced_gallons)
water_to_buy_gal = 0
For concentrate, the calculator splits the replaced gallons between concentrate and distilled water, then rounds each shopping amount up to whole gallons.
concentrate_needed_gal = replaced_gallons * target_antifreeze_percent / 100
water_needed_gal = replaced_gallons - concentrate_needed_gal
coolant_to_buy_gal = ceil(concentrate_needed_gal)
water_to_buy_gal = ceil(water_needed_gal)
Cost math
Coolant cost is based on whole gallons to buy, not the smaller exact amount poured. Extra DIY tools or containers are included only in DIY mode. Labor charge and Shop supplies fee are included only in Shop mode.
coolant_cost = coolant_to_buy_gal * coolant_price_per_gal
water_cost = water_to_buy_gal * distilled_water_price_per_gal
parts_and_supplies_cost = coolant_cost + water_cost + route_extra_cost
labor_cost = labor_charge if service_route = shop else 0
shop_fee_used = shop_supplies_fee if service_route = shop else 0
before_discount = parts_and_supplies_cost + labor_cost + shop_fee_used + disposal_fee
after_discount = before_discount - discount_amount
tax_amount = after_discount * sales_tax_percent / 100
total_cost = after_discount + tax_amount
fees_tax_discount_total = shop_fee_used + disposal_fee + tax_amount - discount_amount
Mini example
Suppose a shop drain-and-fill uses a 3.0 gallon system, 50/50 premix at $18 per gallon, $120 labor, $12 shop supplies, $5 disposal, 6 percent tax, and no discount. The calculator uses 50 percent replacement, so replaced gallons are 1.5. It rounds coolant to buy up to 2 gallons, making coolant cost $36. The before-discount subtotal is $36 + $120 + $12 + $5 = $173. Tax is $10.38, so Estimated total cost is $183.38.
