How to use our Car Maintenance Cost Calculator
- Enter the miles you expect to drive in one year. Odometer records and past service records can help you make a better estimate.
- Click Calculate to see your estimated annual maintenance, repair, and tire budget first, followed by the monthly reserve.
- Open Advanced options if you want to replace the cents-per-mile planning rate with a rate based on your own records.
- If you have a known tire, repair, or service bill, enter both its cost and the whole number of months until it is due.
- Sanity-check the annual estimate by multiplying annual miles by the rate in cents per mile, then dividing by 100. This should match the annual budget before display rounding.

Definitions
Annual mileage: The number of miles you drive in one year.
Maintenance, repair, and tires rate: A planning cost in cents for each mile driven.
Estimated annual maintenance, repair, and tire budget: The mileage-based amount to plan for over one year.
Mileage-based monthly reserve: The yearly mileage-based budget divided evenly across 12 months.
Known upcoming service or repair: A specific bill, such as tires, brakes, a battery, or scheduled service, with a known cost and payment deadline.
Cost per mile: The maintenance, repair, and tire rate expressed in dollars for each mile.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Treating 11.04 cents per mile as $11.04 per mile.
Fix: Enter 11.04 only for a rate of 11.04 cents per mile. That is $0.1104 per mile.
Mistake: Typing an incorrectly grouped number such as 12,00 or $1,20.
Fix: Use 12000 and 1200, or use standard grouping such as 12,000 and $1,200.
Mistake: Entering a known bill without a deadline, or a deadline without a bill amount.
Fix: Fill in both upcoming-service fields, or leave both blank when there is no separate bill to plan for.
Mistake: Adding the same tire or repair bill to both the yearly reserve and the known upcoming bill.
Fix: Add the known bill separately only when your current saved reserve will not already cover it.
Mistake: Using this estimate as the full cost of owning a car.
Fix: Budget fuel, insurance, financing, depreciation, registration, parking, and tolls separately.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This is a general planning estimate, not a repair quote or a prediction for a specific vehicle.
- The mileage-based estimate covers maintenance, repairs, and tires only. It excludes fuel, insurance, financing, depreciation, registration, parking, and tolls.
- Vehicle age, model, condition, driving conditions, local labor rates, parts prices, and service history can change actual costs.
- A known upcoming bill can overlap with the broad yearly reserve. Do not add it again if money already saved in that reserve will cover it.
- Zero annual mileage produces a valid zero mileage-based budget, but a parked car can still need age-based service, repairs, registration, or insurance.
- The monthly reserve spreads an uneven yearly estimate across 12 months, while actual bills may happen earlier or later.
Methodology
Calculation
The calculator converts the selected rate from cents per mile to dollars, multiplies it by annual mileage, and then divides the yearly amount across 12 months.
annual budget = annual miles * rate in cents per mile / 100
mileage-based monthly reserve = annual budget / 12
If both upcoming-service fields are blank, the separate upcoming-service savings amount is $0. If either field has an entry, both are required.
upcoming-service monthly savings = known bill / months until due
total monthly savings goal = mileage-based monthly reserve + upcoming-service monthly savings
cost per mile in dollars = rate in cents per mile / 100
Worked example
At 12,000 miles per year and 11.04 cents per mile, the annual budget is $1,324.80 and the mileage-based monthly reserve is $110.40. A separate $1,200 bill due in 6 months adds $200 per month, so the combined monthly savings goal is $310.40.
Rounding
The calculator uses unrounded values in its calculations and rounds currency for display. A zero annual-mileage entry is valid and produces a zero mileage-based annual budget and monthly reserve.
