How to use our Pool Lighting Calculator

  1. Enter Pool length and Pool width in feet, using the inside water dimensions. If the pool is curved, use the longest length and an average width.
  2. Choose a Lighting goal, enter Lumens per light from the fixture spec sheet, and pick the closest Pool finish color.
  3. Open Advanced options if Pool shape, Deep-end challenge, or Useful-light factor should be adjusted, or if you want energy cost from Power per light, Use per night, Nights used per year, and Electricity price.
  4. Click Calculate and read Recommended lights first, then check Adjusted target light output, Coverage compared with target, and Rough spacing along the long wall.
  5. Sanity-check the result: if spacing is under about 3 ft, the count is over 12 lights, or the Planning note appears, treat the answer as a design flag and ask a pool-lighting pro before buying fixtures.

Definitions

Lumen (lm): A measure of light output from a fixture. More lumens means the light can add more brightness.

Lumens per square foot: Light output spread over each square foot of pool surface. Pool lighting guides commonly use this idea to set a brightness target [2].

Foot-candle: One lumen spread evenly over one square foot. It is another way to describe average brightness on a surface.

Adjusted target light output: The total lumens the calculator aims for after pool area, Lighting goal, Pool finish color, Pool shape, and Deep-end challenge are included.

Useful-light factor: The share of rated fixture lumens that are expected to help light the pool after aiming, fixture optics, and blocked light are considered.

Coverage compared with target: Estimated useful light divided by the adjusted target. Near 100% means the rounded fixture count just meets the target.

kWh: Kilowatt-hour, the unit electric companies use for energy. One 1,000-watt load running for one hour uses 1 kWh.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Using deck-to-deck measurements for Pool length or Pool width.
Fix: Measure the inside water area, or use a careful average Pool width for curved pools.

Mistake: Putting watts into Lumens per light because both are printed on a light box.
Fix: Use the lumen rating for Lumens per light and use Power per light only for the optional energy estimate.

Mistake: Leaving Pool shape as simple when the pool has coves, benches, ledges, or an L-shape.
Fix: Change Pool shape to the closest freeform choice so the Adjusted target light output includes more layout difficulty.

Mistake: Choosing a light Pool finish color for a dark pebble, black, or dark blue interior.
Fix: Set Pool finish color to the dark option so the Recommended lights account for more absorbed light.

Mistake: Filling only Electricity price and leaving Power per light, Use per night, or Nights used per year blank.
Fix: Enter all four energy fields, or clear all four if you do not need Estimated yearly lighting cost.

Mistake: Setting Useful-light factor to 0 or above 1.
Fix: Enter a value greater than 0 and no more than 1, such as 0.90 for a normal planning estimate.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This is a planning estimate for residential underwater pool lighting, not an electrical code check, permit review, or safety certification.
  • The area method treats the pool as length times width. For freeform pools, the result depends on how well the average Pool width matches the real water area.
  • The brightness presets are planning targets in lumens per square foot. They do not replace a lighting designer's calculation for glare, visibility, fixture beam angle, or local rules.
  • The spacing estimate assumes one simple line of lights along the long wall. Stairs, benches, tanning ledges, curves, and windows can change the best placement.
  • Lumens per light is rated fixture output. Real underwater brightness can differ because of water clarity, fixture aiming, wall color, lens design, and obstructions.
  • Energy cost is shown only when all four energy inputs are entered, and it covers light electricity only. It does not include installation, transformer losses, repairs, or pool pump energy.
  • If Recommended lights is very high or Rough spacing along the long wall is very small, a higher-output fixture, split-zone layout, or custom design may be better than adding many close lights.

Methodology

Calculation steps

The calculator starts with pool surface area, then applies a brightness target in lumens per square foot. Pool lighting guides often use lumens per square foot to describe a residential lighting goal [1][2].

area_sq_ft = pool_length_ft * pool_width_ft

target_lm_per_sq_ft = preset(brightness_goal)

The preset targets are 6 lm/ft^2 for Soft glow, 10 lm/ft^2 for Everyday night swimming, 15 lm/ft^2 for Bright party lighting, and 20 lm/ft^2 for Very bright activity lighting.

finish_multiplier = preset(pool_finish)

shape_multiplier = preset(pool_shape)

depth_multiplier = preset(deep_end_level)

The finish multipliers are 0.85 for light, 1.00 for medium, and 1.25 for dark. The shape multipliers are 1.00 for simple, 1.10 for moderate, and 1.20 for complex. The depth multipliers are 0.90 for shallow, 1.00 for normal, and 1.25 for deep.

target_total_lumens = area_sq_ft * target_lm_per_sq_ft * finish_multiplier * shape_multiplier * depth_multiplier

useful_lumens_per_light = lumens_per_light * useful_light_factor

recommended_lights = ceil(target_total_lumens / useful_lumens_per_light)

The fixture count is rounded up because a pool cannot use part of a light. The minimum valid result is 1 light when all required inputs are valid.

installed_lumens = recommended_lights * lumens_per_light

coverage_percent = 100 * (recommended_lights * useful_lumens_per_light) / target_total_lumens

spacing_along_length = pool_length_ft / (recommended_lights + 1)

Optional energy math

Energy results are calculated only when Power per light, Use per night, Nights used per year, and Electricity price are all entered and valid.

estimated_yearly_energy = recommended_lights * watts_per_light / 1000 * hours_per_night * nights_per_year

estimated_yearly_cost = estimated_yearly_energy * electricity_rate

Worked example

For a 30 ft by 15 ft pool, the area is 450 sq ft. With Everyday night swimming at 10 lm/ft^2, medium finish, simple shape, normal depth, 2,000 lm lights, and a 0.90 Useful-light factor, the adjusted target is 4,500 lm.

useful_lumens_per_light = 2000 * 0.90 = 1800 lm

recommended_lights = ceil(4500 / 1800) = 3 lights

installed_lumens = 3 * 2000 = 6000 lm

coverage_percent = 100 * (3 * 1800) / 4500 = 120%

spacing_along_length = 30 / (3 + 1) = 7.5 ft
