Convert kelvin and Rankine temperatures or temperature changes with the correct absolute-zero check.

How to use our Kelvin to Rankine Converter
- Set Convert direction to choose whether you are starting with kelvin or Rankine.
- Choose What kind of value is this?: use Actual temperature for a thermometer-style reading, or Temperature change for a rise or drop.
- Enter the active amount in Kelvin amount (K) or Rankine amount (degR); the other amount is ignored for that direction.
- Use Round answer to (decimal places) if you need fewer or more digits, then select Calculate.
- Sanity-check the Converted value: kelvin to Rankine should be 1.8 times the starting number, and Rankine to kelvin should be a little over half the starting number.

Definitions
Kelvin amount (K): The starting value in kelvin when Convert direction is Kelvin to Rankine. Kelvin is an absolute temperature scale, and 0 K is absolute zero [1].
Rankine amount (degR): The starting value in degrees Rankine when Convert direction is Rankine to kelvin. Rankine is an absolute temperature scale with the same zero point as kelvin [2].
Actual temperature: A real temperature reading on an absolute scale. Actual values cannot be below 0 K or 0 degR.
Temperature change: A difference between two temperatures, such as a 10 K rise or a -10 K drop. A temperature change may be negative.
Round answer to (decimal places): The number of digits shown after the decimal point in the final Converted value.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a negative Kelvin amount (K) while What kind of value is this? is set to Actual temperature.
Fix: Use 0 or higher for an actual temperature, or switch to Temperature change if you mean a drop.
Mistake: Changing Convert direction but typing in the amount field that is no longer active.
Fix: For Kelvin to Rankine, use Kelvin amount (K) ; for Rankine to kelvin, use Rankine amount (degR) .
Mistake: Treating Converted value as Celsius or Fahrenheit because the number looks familiar.
Fix: Read the unit shown with Converted value : it is degR for Kelvin to Rankine and K for Rankine to kelvin.
Mistake: Using Temperature change for a normal thermometer reading.
Fix: Check Convert direction and then recalculate. Choose Actual temperature when the value is a real temperature on an absolute scale.
Mistake: Setting Round answer to (decimal places) too low for homework or lab work.
Fix: Use 3, 4, or 6 decimal places when your assignment needs a more exact copied answer.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This converter only handles kelvin and degrees Rankine. It does not convert Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- For Actual temperature, values below 0 are blocked because absolute temperature scales start at absolute zero.
- For Temperature change, negative values are allowed because a change can describe a drop.
- The calculator rounds only the displayed Converted value. The conversion is done first, then the shown answer is rounded.
- Very large or very tiny numbers may be limited by normal browser number precision.
- The calculator reads only the active amount field for the chosen Convert direction; hidden field values do not affect the result.
Methodology
Conversion rule
Kelvin and Rankine are both absolute temperature scales, so the conversion changes only the size of the degree. One kelvin-sized step equals 1.8 Rankine-sized steps.
R = K * 9 / 5
K = R * 5 / 9
In these formulas, K is the kelvin value and R is the Rankine value.
Rounding
The calculator keeps the full converted number during the calculation and rounds only the answer shown on the page.
shown_answer = round(converted_value, decimal_places)
Actual temperature check
If What kind of value is this? is Actual temperature, the active input must be 0 or higher. If it is Temperature change, the calculator allows negative values and keeps the negative sign in the Converted value.
Mini-example
If Kelvin amount (K) is 300 and Convert direction is Kelvin to Rankine, the calculation is 300 * 9 / 5 = 540, so the Converted value is 540 degR. If Rankine amount (degR) is 491.67, the reverse calculation is 491.67 * 5 / 9 = 273.15, so the Converted value is 273.15 K.
