BTU to kWh Converter

Convert BTU, MMBTU, and kWh with the right factor and a clear warning if you may be mixing energy units with power units.

Enter energy (an amount). If you have a rate like BTU/h or kW, this is the wrong tool.

How to use our BTU to kWh Converter

  1. Choose Convert to tell the calculator whether you are starting with BTU or with kWh.
  2. Enter your Energy value, then choose BTU size as either BTU or MMBTU if BTU-based units are involved.
  3. Pick Decimal places, and if needed open the advanced options to change Number style or Show conversion factor as.
  4. Click Calculate to see Converted value, Conversion factor used, and What 1 unit equals.
  5. Sanity-check the answer by reading What 1 unit equals and any Note; if your source unit was something like BTU/h or kW, you need a power converter instead of this energy converter.

Definitions

BTU: A British thermal unit, an energy unit used in heating and cooling [1].

MMBTU: One million BTU.

kWh: A kilowatt-hour, an energy unit often used on electric bills [2].

BTU size: Tells the calculator whether your BTU-based number is in single BTU or in MMBTU.

Conversion factor: The number multiplied by your starting value to change it into the target unit.

Energy vs power: Energy is an amount used over time, like kWh or BTU. Power is a rate, like kW or BTU/h.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Typing an air-conditioner rating in Energy value when the real unit is BTU/h.
Fix: This calculator converts energy, not power. If the original number includes "/h" or "per hour," do not use the Converted value from this page.

Mistake: Leaving Convert on BTU to kWh when your starting number is already in kWh.
Fix: Switch Convert to kWh to BTU before you calculate so the Conversion factor used matches your input unit.

Mistake: Entering 1 in Energy value but forgetting to change BTU size from BTU to MMBTU.
Fix: Use BTU size = MMBTU when your source says million BTU. Otherwise the Converted value will be off by a factor of 1,000,000.

Mistake: Reading the Converted value as kW instead of kWh, or as BTU/h instead of BTU.
Fix: Check the unit shown with the result. kWh and BTU are energy amounts; kW and BTU/h are rates.

Mistake: Pasting a number with commas or spaces and thinking the calculator cannot read it.
Fix: Enter the Energy value normally. The calculator strips commas and spaces before converting.

Mistake: Using too few digits in Decimal places for a homework check or report.
Fix: Increase Decimal places so the Conversion factor used and Converted value show enough precision for your task.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This page converts energy units only: BTU, MMBTU, and kWh. It does not convert power units such as BTU/h, kW, or tons of cooling.
  • The math uses the BTU (IT) definition. A different BTU definition can change the result slightly.
  • Negative values are allowed for bookkeeping cases, so a negative Converted value is not treated as an error.
  • Displayed digits depend on Decimal places and formatting choices, so rounded results may differ a little from full-precision calculations.
  • Very large inputs are formatted to stay readable, but the result is still only a unit conversion and does not include appliance efficiency, fuel content variation, or real system losses.

Methodology

How the conversion works

This calculator changes one energy unit into another using a fixed conversion factor. It first reads the Energy value, checks the selected Convert direction, and then applies the matching formula. If BTU size is set to MMBTU, it scales by 1,000,000 BTU before or after the main conversion so the final unit stays correct.

kWh = BTU x 0.00029307107017

BTU = kWh x 3412.141633

BTU_total = MMBTU x 1000000

Worked mini-example

If Convert is BTU to kWh, Energy value is 10,000, and BTU size is BTU, then:

kWh = 10000 x 0.00029307107017 = 2.9307107017

With 6 decimal places, the displayed Converted value is 2.930711 kWh.

If Convert is kWh to BTU and the input is 1 kWh, then:

BTU = 1 x 3412.141633 = 3412.141633

If BTU size is MMBTU in that direction, the calculator reports the BTU result in millions of BTU instead, so 293.07107 kWh is about 1 MMBTU.

Factor choice

The calculator uses the standard BTU (IT) relationship and its inverse. That keeps the forward and reverse conversions consistent, and it matches common energy-unit references used in industry and education.

Assumptions and limits

This is a straight unit conversion. It does not estimate electricity use, fuel burn, equipment efficiency, seasonal performance, or utility cost. A warning Note may appear when the entry looks like a power-unit mix-up, because BTU/h and kW are rates, not energy amounts.
