Enter liters to see the equivalent in US liquid gallons, with Imperial gallons shown separately to prevent confusion.
This is the US liquid gallon result. One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters.
Use this result when gallon means the Imperial gallon. One Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters.

How to use our Liters to Gallons Converter
- Enter the volume from your label, recipe, worksheet, or measurement note in Liters (L). You can enter 2.5, 1,000, or 2.5 L.
- Click Calculate to see the equivalent in US liquid gallons, which is the main answer for US measurements.
- Use Imperial gallons only when the original source specifically uses Imperial gallons.
- Open Advanced options to choose the number of decimal places needed for a worksheet, label, or record.
- Sanity-check the result: 1 L is about 0.264 US gal, so the US-gallon number should be smaller than the liter number.

Definitions
Liter (L): A metric unit of volume. Enter the source volume in liters.
US liquid gallon (US gal): A US volume unit equal to exactly 3.785411784 liters.
Imperial gallon (Imp gal): A larger gallon unit equal to exactly 4.54609 liters.
Result decimal places: The number of digits shown after the decimal point. This changes displayed rounding only.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Using the Imperial gallons value for a US measurement.
Fix: Check Liters and then recalculate. Use the US liquid gallons result unless the source specifically says Imperial gallons.
Mistake: Entering gallons, such as "2.5 gal", in the liters field.
Fix: Check Liters and then recalculate. Enter liters only. You may use no suffix or add L, liter, or liters.
Mistake: Typing "1,5" for one and a half liters.
Fix: Check Liters and then recalculate. Use a decimal point: enter "1.5". Commas are for thousands grouping, such as "1,000".
Mistake: Using malformed comma grouping, such as "1,01".
Fix: Check Liters and then recalculate. Group thousands in sets of three digits, such as "1,000", or enter "101" without a comma.
Mistake: Treating displayed digits as the precision of the original measurement.
Fix: Check Liters and then recalculate. Choose decimal places that fit your task, but do not report more precision than the label or measurement supports.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The converter accepts zero or positive physical volume amounts. Negative values are not accepted.
- The main result uses the US liquid gallon, not the US dry gallon.
- Use the Imperial result only when the source actually means Imperial gallons.
- Rounding changes the displayed value, not the original measurement precision.
- This is a unit conversion only. It does not account for temperature-related volume changes, container tolerances, or price.
Methodology
Conversion method
The calculator divides the entered liters by the liters in one gallon. One US liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 L, and one Imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 L.
US liquid gallons = liters / 3.785411784
Imperial gallons = liters / 4.54609
Worked example
For 2.5 L, 2.5 divided by 3.785411784 equals about 0.6604 US gal. Dividing 2.5 by 4.54609 equals about 0.5499 Imp gal. The Imperial value is smaller because an Imperial gallon holds more liters.
Calculation choices
The calculator converts from the unrounded entered value, then rounds only for display. Changing Result decimal places does not convert a previously rounded answer again.
