How to use our Gallons to Liters and mL Converter
- Choose Convert direction: use Gallons to liters and mL if you know the gallon amount, or Liters and mL to gallons if you know the metric amount.
- Choose Gallon type carefully. US liquid gallon is the usual US choice, while Imperial gallon is larger and changes the answer a lot.
- Enter Amount in gallons, or enter Liters and Extra milliliters for the reverse direction.
- Pick Round answers to if you need fewer or more digits, then select Calculate.
- Sanity-check the result by comparing Total liters, Total milliliters, and Liters plus extra mL. For 1 US liquid gallon, the result should be about 3.785 L.
Definitions
Gallon: A liquid volume unit. A US liquid gallon and an Imperial gallon are different sizes.
US liquid gallon: The gallon type commonly used for US fuel, milk, aquariums, and tanks. This converter uses 3.785411784 L per US liquid gallon.
Imperial gallon: A larger gallon type used in UK-style measurements. This converter uses 4.54609 L per Imperial gallon.
Liter (L): A metric volume unit. It is bigger than a milliliter.
Milliliter (mL): A small metric volume unit. There are 1000 mL in 1 L.
Liters plus extra mL: The same volume split into whole liters and leftover milliliters, such as 3 L plus 785.412 mL.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Leaving Convert direction on Gallons to liters and mL while typing into Liters and Extra milliliters.
Fix: Change Convert direction to Liters and mL to gallons before entering metric volume.
Mistake: Picking the wrong Gallon type for a UK or Imperial amount.
Fix: Set Gallon type to Imperial gallon when the source uses Imperial gallons.
Mistake: Typing a negative Amount in gallons, Liters, or Extra milliliters.
Fix: Use 0 or a positive number because this converter handles physical liquid volume.
Mistake: Putting 500 in Liters when the amount is really 500 mL.
Fix: Put 0 in Liters and 500 in Extra milliliters.
Mistake: Thinking Round answers to changes the real conversion factor.
Fix: Use Round answers to only for display. The math still uses the full stored factor.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The calculator converts liquid volume only. It does not adjust for liquid temperature, density, foam, container shape, or measuring losses.
- US liquid gallon and Imperial gallon are not interchangeable. If the source does not say which gallon type it uses, the answer may be off.
- Negative volumes are blocked because a physical liquid amount cannot be negative in this converter.
- In Liters and mL to gallons mode, the total of Liters and Extra milliliters must be greater than 0.
- Displayed values are rounded to the selected Round answers to setting, so very small differences can appear when you compare rounded outputs.
- Very large values are still simple unit conversions. They do not check whether a real tank, bottle, or measuring tool can hold that amount.
Methodology
How the conversion is calculated
The calculator first picks the liters-per-gallon factor from Gallon type.
factor_L_per_gal = 3.785411784 for US liquid gallon
factor_L_per_gal = 4.54609 for Imperial gallon
For Gallons to liters and mL, it multiplies Amount in gallons by the selected factor.
total_liters = gallons * factor_L_per_gal
total_milliliters = total_liters * 1000
For Liters and mL to gallons, it first combines Liters and Extra milliliters, then divides by the selected factor.
total_liters = liters + milliliters / 1000
total_gallons = total_liters / factor_L_per_gal
How the liters and mL split is made
The split turns the total milliliters into whole liters plus the leftover milliliters.
whole_liters = floor(total_milliliters / 1000)
extra_milliliters = total_milliliters - whole_liters * 1000
Rounding is applied only to the displayed answers. If rounding would show 1000 extra mL, the display carries 1 into the whole liters and shows 0 extra mL.
Mini example
For 1 US liquid gallon, the factor is 3.785411784 L per gal.
total_liters = 1 * 3.785411784 = 3.785411784 L
total_milliliters = 3.785411784 * 1000 = 3785.411784 mL
Rounded to 3 decimal places, the answer is 3.785 L, 3785.412 mL, or 3 L plus 785.412 mL.
