Turtle Tank Size Calculator

Compare actual water volume with a red-eared slider planning estimate, and estimate the weight of that water. This is not a universal minimum tank size or a check that an enclosure is suitable for every turtle species.

Enter actual US gallons of water, not the tank size printed on the label. For example, enter 30 for a 60-gallon tank holding 30 gallons of water.

How to use our Turtle Tank Size Calculator

  1. Enter "Shell length (in)" as the straight top-shell length. Choose "Current shell length" or "Adult shell length goal" to describe the measurement you entered.
  2. Enter "Actual water volume (US gal)" as the water actually present. Exclude unfilled space and the volume displaced by substrate and equipment. A tank advertised as 60 gallons but holding 30 gallons of water is entered as 30.
  3. Select "Number of turtles" and any "Extra planning volume (%)". More than one turtle is a simple equal-size planning scenario, not advice to house turtles together.
  4. Click "Calculate". Compare "Water-volume planning target" with "How actual water compares" and "Water-volume difference".

What the results mean

This calculation compares water with water. "Matches planning volume" means only that your entered water equals the arithmetic target. It does not mean the tank meets every care requirement. Check usable swimming dimensions, adult enclosure size, dry basking space, filtration, heating, lighting, escape prevention and safe access to the surface separately.

The 10-US-gallons-per-inch rule and shell-length depth reference are drawn from ReptiFiles guidance for red-eared sliders. They are not universal rules for all turtles. That guide also recommends at least a 100-US-gallon enclosure for adult sliders; the calculator does not impose this separate adult enclosure recommendation as a hidden water-volume floor. Read the full species-specific guidance before choosing a setup. See also RSPCA terrapin care guidance.

Methodology

Water-volume planning target (US gal) = shell length (in) x 10 x number of turtles x (1 + extra planning volume / 100).

Water-volume difference = actual water volume - planning target.

Slider depth reference (in) = entered shell length. This is a red-eared slider reference, not a safe depth for every species or swimming ability.

Target water weight (lb) = planning target (US gal) x 8.34. This estimates water weight only; the complete setup is heavier. It does not rate a stand or floor.

The count multiplier reserves one full planning volume per turtle of the entered size. It is not the source's exact multi-turtle formula and cannot determine whether turtles can share an enclosure.

Example

For one 6-inch slider with no extra allowance, the water-volume planning target is 6 x 10 = 60 US gal. If a nominal 60-gallon tank contains only 30 US gal of water, enter 30: the difference is 30 - 60 = -30 US gal, so it is "Below planning volume".

With 25% extra planning volume, the target becomes 75 US gal. If 40 US gal of water are present, the difference is -35 US gal. The 75-US-gallon target water alone weighs approximately 625.5 lb. These calculations do not establish overall enclosure suitability.
