How to use our Square Kilometers to Square Meters Converter
- Find the area value labeled square kilometers, km^2, or sq km on your map, worksheet, record, or data table.
- Enter the number in the area box. You can type the number alone or add km^2 or sq km after it.
- Click Calculate to see the equivalent area in square meters.
- Check that the result is 1,000,000 times the square-kilometer value, since this is an area conversion and not a length conversion.

Definitions
Square kilometer (km^2 or sq km): An area equal to a square with sides that are each 1 kilometer long.
Square meter (m^2 or sq m): An area equal to a square with sides that are each 1 meter long.
Conversion factor: The number used to change from one unit to another. This conversion uses 1,000,000 m^2 per km^2.
Squared unit: A unit for area. The 2 in km^2 means kilometers multiplied by kilometers.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Multiplying by 1,000 because 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters.
Fix: Area has length and width, so multiply by 1,000 x 1,000 = 1,000,000.
Mistake: Entering a distance labeled km instead of an area labeled km^2.
Fix: Use a value labeled km^2 or sq km. A value in km alone is a length and cannot be converted by this tool.
Mistake: Using unusual comma placement, such as 1,01.
Fix: Use commas only in thousands groups, such as 1,250. Use a decimal point for fractional values, such as 1.01.
Mistake: Adding another unit after the number, such as m^2.
Fix: Enter square kilometers only. A number alone, km^2, and sq km are accepted.
Mistake: Thinking a large square-meter result must be wrong.
Fix: Large results are expected because 1 km^2 contains 1,000,000 m^2.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This converter accepts physical area values of zero or greater; negative values are rejected.
- It converts only from square kilometers to square meters. Kilometers without the square are a length unit, not an area unit.
- The entered number must already be measured in square kilometers.
- Very large or very small results may be formatted for readability, although the conversion factor is exact.
- Commas must use standard thousands grouping, such as 1,250. Use a decimal point for fractions.
Methodology
Conversion method
One kilometer is 1,000 meters. A square kilometer has sides of 1,000 meters, so its area is 1,000 x 1,000, or 1,000,000 square meters. [1]
square meters = square kilometers x 1,000,000
1 km^2 = 1,000,000 m^2
Worked example
For 2.5 km^2, multiply 2.5 by 1,000,000. The exact result is 2,500,000 m^2.
2.5 km^2 x 1,000,000 = 2,500,000 m^2
Calculation boundaries
Zero is valid and converts to 0 m^2. Negative values are not accepted because this converter is for physical area. The calculation requires an area in square kilometers, not a length in kilometers.
