How to use our Square Meters to Square Kilometers Converter
- Enter the area from your worksheet, map, report, or measurement record in square meters.
- For large values, use standard comma grouping, such as 1,000,000. You can also add m2, m^2, sq m, or square meters after the number.
- Click Calculate to see the equivalent area in square kilometers.
- Open Advanced options if you also need the answer written in scientific notation.
- Check the size of the answer: 1,000,000 m2 equals 1 km2, so the number in km2 should be one million times smaller than the number in m2.

Definitions
Square meter (m2): An area equal to a square that is 1 meter long and 1 meter wide.
Square kilometer (km2): An area equal to a square that is 1 kilometer long and 1 kilometer wide. One square kilometer equals 1,000,000 square meters.
Scientific notation: A way to write a number using a value times a power of 10. For example, 0.25 can be written as 2.5 x 10^-1.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Dividing by 1,000 because 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters.
Fix: Area has length and width, so divide square meters by 1,000,000.
Mistake: Entering square kilometers in the source field.
Fix: Enter the original area in square meters. A suffix can be m2, m^2, sq m, or square meters.
Mistake: Typing uneven comma groups, such as 1,00,000.
Fix: Put commas between groups of three digits, such as 100,000 or 1,000,000.
Mistake: Reading a very small nonzero answer as zero.
Fix: Use the decimal answer or select scientific notation to see the small value without misleading rounding.
Mistake: Entering a negative area.
Fix: Enter 0 or a positive number. Zero is valid, but physical area cannot be negative in this converter.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This converter changes area units only. It does not find area from length and width.
- The source value must be an area in square meters, not a length in meters or an area already stated in square kilometers.
- Physical area must be 0 or greater. Zero is valid and converts to exactly 0 km2.
- Very large finite entries can exceed normal browser number limits. The calculator shows an error instead of an infinite result.
- The calculator uses the unrounded converted value, although the displayed decimal may be shortened for readability.
Methodology
Conversion rule
One kilometer is 1,000 meters. A square kilometer has a length and width of 1,000 meters, so it contains 1,000 m x 1,000 m, or 1,000,000 m2.
area in km2 = area in m2 / 1,000,000
Worked example
For 250,000 m2, divide by 1,000,000. The converted area is 0.25 km2.
250,000 / 1,000,000 = 0.25
Display and calculation limits
The calculator keeps the unrounded converted value before formatting the answer. Scientific notation is another way to write the same value: 0.25 km2 is 2.5 x 10^-1 km2. The conversion applies only to nonnegative areas entered in square meters.
