How to use our Metacam Dosage Calculator for Dogs
- Enter your dog's current weight in Dog weight, then choose the matching Weight unit.
- Use Custom mg per kg to enter the rate your veterinarian prescribed, or choose First day or Daily after first day only when that label-reference preset matches the prescription.
- Choose Formulation. If you are using liquid, open Advanced options and confirm Liquid strength (mg/mL) and Smallest mL mark you can measure. If you are using tablets, confirm Tablet strength (mg) and Smallest tablet fraction you can give.
- Click Calculate, then read the main result first: Target meloxicam dose. After that, use Rounded liquid comparison or Nearest tablet comparison to understand the arithmetic change in Actual dose. These comparisons do not tell you what to administer.
- Confirm Dose rate used, the product strength, and the administration instructions with the prescription. Read Safety note even when the arithmetic rounding difference is small.
Definitions
Meloxicam: A medicine used in dogs; Metacam is a brand name for meloxicam.
Dose phase: Whether you are calculating the higher first-day dose, the lower daily maintenance dose, or a custom rate.
mg/kg: Milligrams of drug for each kilogram of body weight. This is the dose rate used to calculate the exact drug amount.
Target meloxicam dose: The exact amount of meloxicam in milligrams before rounding to a liquid mark or tablet piece.
Liquid strength (mg/mL): How many milligrams of meloxicam are in each milliliter of liquid. This is also called concentration.
Rounded liquid comparison: The nearest mathematical mL multiple of the selected syringe step, shown for comparison only. It is not an instruction to round the prescribed dose.
Nearest tablet comparison: The closest whole or half-tablet amount mathematically, for comparison with the prescribed amount. This is not the product label's weight-band dosing scheme.
Actual dose: The real mg/kg your dog would get after rounding the liquid or tablet amount.
Label-reference rates: The cited US oral-suspension and GB chewable-tablet labels use 0.2 mg/kg on the first treatment day and 0.1 mg/kg once daily afterward. These are discrete reference rates, not a safe-dose range. Use only the phase and amount prescribed for your dog.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering pounds in Dog weight but leaving Weight unit on kilograms.
Fix: Make the number and unit match before you calculate, or the Target meloxicam dose will be wrong.
Mistake: Using First day in Dose phase for a dose that should be Daily after first day .
Fix: Check Dose rate used after calculating. It should show 0.2 mg/kg for first day or 0.1 mg/kg for maintenance unless you chose a custom rate.
Mistake: Picking the wrong Liquid strength (mg/mL) for the bottle you have.
Fix: Read the bottle label and match it exactly, because the wrong strength changes both Exact liquid amount and Rounded liquid comparison .
Mistake: Ignoring the syringe size and reading Exact liquid amount as if it were always easy to measure at home.
Fix: Set Smallest mL mark you can measure to your real syringe step to compare the rounding effect. Do not administer the rounded comparison unless your veterinarian confirms it.
Mistake: Choosing tablets for a very small dog and assuming any rounded tablet piece is close enough.
Fix: Use Nearest tablet comparison and Actual dose from tablet rounding only to discuss the difference with your veterinarian. The GB chewable-tablet labels exclude dogs below 4 kg and use specific weight bands; the closest mathematical piece is not their dose scheme.
Mistake: Leaving Custom dose (mg per kg) blank when Custom mg per kg is selected in Dose phase .
Fix: Enter the exact prescribed rate in Custom dose (mg per kg) before you calculate.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This calculator converts a chosen dose rate into mg, mL, or tablet amounts. It does not decide whether meloxicam is appropriate for your dog.
- The built-in phase rates refer to the cited US Metacam oral suspensions and GB Metacam chewable tablets. They do not establish suitability for an individual dog, other products or jurisdictions. Custom dose (mg per kg) starts blank so you must enter the prescribed rate.
- Results depend on matching the exact product form and strength you have. A wrong Liquid strength (mg/mL) or Tablet strength (mg) will give the wrong conversion.
- Liquid rounding is based on the Smallest mL mark you can measure. Real home dosing may still vary if the syringe is hard to read or the amount is very small.
- Tablet rounding uses Smallest tablet fraction you can give as an arithmetic step only. The GB 1 mg and 2.5 mg chewables may be halved, but their labeled maintenance weight bands are not reproduced by nearest-step rounding.
- For very small dogs, the same rounding step causes a bigger change in mg/kg than it does in larger dogs, so the practical dose can drift more from the target.
- The calculator shows the nearest mathematical rounding result. It does not account for every product-specific label instruction, flavoring device, or clinic protocol.
Methodology
How the calculator works
The calculator first converts body weight to kilograms when needed, chooses the dose rate from the selected phase, and then converts that exact drug amount into either liquid volume or tablet pieces.

Liquid calculations
If Formulation is oral suspension, the exact liquid amount comes from the bottle strength, then the calculator rounds to the nearest syringe step you selected.

practical_ml = round(target_ml / measuring_step_ml) x measuring_step_ml
actual_mg_per_kg_liquid = (practical_ml x suspension_strength_mg_per_ml) / weight_kg
This is why the page shows both the exact liquid amount and the rounded liquid comparison. The actual mg/kg after rounding helps you see whether a small measuring step changes the delivered dose much.
Tablet calculations
If Formulation is tablet, the calculator converts the target milligrams into tablets and rounds to the nearest whole or half tablet, based on your selected split size.

actual_mg_per_kg_tablet = (tablet_count x tablet_strength_mg) / weight_kg
The tablet result is an arithmetic comparison, not an administration recommendation. For example, at 7.1 kg and 0.1 mg/kg, nearest-half rounding of a 1 mg tablet gives 0.5 tablet; the cited GB label instead places 7.1 kg in its 1-tablet maintenance band. Follow the prescription and the exact label, not this comparison.
Mini example
A 50 lb dog on Daily after first day is first converted to kilograms: about 22.68 kg. Using 0.1 mg/kg gives a Target meloxicam dose of about 2.268 mg.
22.6796 x 0.1 = 2.26796 mg
With a 1.5 mg/mL liquid, the exact liquid amount is about 1.512 mL. If the syringe measures to 0.01 mL, the mathematical rounded comparison is 1.51 mL, which corresponds to about 0.0999 mg/kg. This illustrates rounding only; it is not a dosing instruction.

(1.51 x 1.5) / 22.6796 = 0.09987 mg/kg
Assumptions and limits
The method assumes the entered weight, strength, and selected phase are correct. Hidden formulation fields are ignored so liquid settings do not affect tablet math and tablet settings do not affect liquid math. The calculator also blocks divide-by-zero and missing custom-rate errors. Product labels and veterinary instructions can differ, so use the selected formulation and strength exactly as prescribed.
