How to use our Inches of Water to PSI Converter
- Enter your pressure in Inches of water (inH2O). You can use decimals, and negative values are allowed for pressure differences below your reference point.
- Choose Show result as: use Practical rounding for a quick everyday answer or More decimals when you want a closer match for notes, specs, or hand checks.
- Set Also show reverse check to Yes if you want the tool to convert the displayed psi back into inches of water.
- Click Calculate to see Pressure (psi), Conversion factor used, and the optional Back-converted inches of water.
- Sanity-check the result: about 27.68 inH2O is about 1 psi, so 10 inH2O should be about 0.36 psi and 0 inH2O should give 0 psi.

Definitions
Inches of water (inH2O): A low-pressure unit based on the height of a water column. It is often used for small pressure differences such as airflow and gas pressure.
PSI: Pounds per square inch. It tells you how much force presses on one square inch of area.
Conversion factor used: The number multiplied by inches of water to get psi. In this calculator, the factor is 0.036126291 psi per inH2O.
Practical rounding: A shorter answer that is easier to read and use for quick checks.
More decimals: A longer answer that keeps more digits so you can compare calculations more closely.
Back-converted inches of water: The inches-of-water value found by converting the displayed psi answer back to inH2O using the same factor.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Leaving Inches of water (inH2O) blank and expecting the tool to assume 0.
Fix: Enter a number in Inches of water (inH2O) . Blank input is an error, but 0 is valid.
Mistake: Typing psi into Inches of water (inH2O) .
Fix: Make sure the input is in inches of water, then read the converted value from Pressure (psi) .
Mistake: Thinking a negative Pressure (psi) means the calculator failed.
Fix: Negative values are allowed for pressure differences. A negative Pressure (psi) means the pressure is below your chosen reference point.
Mistake: Comparing your answer to another site without noticing a different rounding style.
Fix: Change Show result as and check the Conversion factor used and Note before deciding the answers disagree.
Mistake: Expecting Back-converted inches of water to match your input exactly after rounding.
Fix: Turn Also show reverse check to Yes and remember that small differences usually come from rounding the displayed psi value.
Mistake: Looking for the reverse result when it is turned off.
Fix: Set Also show reverse check to Yes if you want to see Back-converted inches of water .
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This calculator uses one fixed factor: 1 inH2O = 0.036126291 psi. Small differences from other charts can happen if they use a rounded factor or a different reference definition for inch of water.
- The result is only as exact as the displayed rounding you choose. If you pick practical rounding, the optional reverse check can differ slightly from your original input.
- The tool converts units only. It does not correct for measurement setup, gauge location, fluid density changes, temperature effects, or instrument calibration.
- Negative values are treated as valid pressure differences below a chosen reference point. That is useful for differential pressure, but it may not match every field instrument display.
- Very large or very tiny values are shown in normal number format for readability, so the screen display may look rounded even though the internal calculation uses the stated factor.
Methodology
How the conversion is calculated
The calculator multiplies your inches-of-water value by a fixed conversion factor to get psi.
psi = inH2O x 0.036126291
If you turn on the reverse check, it converts the displayed psi result back to inches of water using the reciprocal relationship.
inH2O = psi / 0.036126291
What the factor means
An inch of water is a small pressure unit based on the height of a water column. This calculator uses the standard factor for inches of water at 4 C, which is why its answer can differ slightly from pages that use a shorter rounded factor such as 0.0361.
Worked mini-example
For 10 inH2O:
psi = 10 x 0.036126291 = 0.36126291
If the reverse check is on:
inH2O = 0.36126291 / 0.036126291 = 10
With practical rounding, the displayed psi may be shorter, so the back-converted value can be off by a tiny amount only because of display rounding.
Calculation choices
If Show result as is set to Practical rounding, the calculator shows a shorter displayed answer. If it is set to More decimals, it shows more digits. The underlying factor stays the same in both modes.
Assumptions and limits
This method assumes the stated inH2O-to-psi factor is the one you want. Real systems can differ because of reference conventions, measurement conditions, or published rounding choices. The calculator does not estimate those effects; it only converts the units you enter.
