Grams to Cups Converter

Enter your recipe's grams and the ingredient's weight per US cup to find the matching US customary or metric cup amount.

The calculation uses a US customary cup (236.588 mL) unless you choose a metric cup in Advanced options.

How to use our Grams to Cups Converter

  1. Enter the amount from the recipe in Recipe weight (g). You can type a decimal, simple fraction, or mixed number, such as 62 1/2.
  2. Enter Ingredient weight for 1 US cup (g) using the same ingredient and preparation listed in the recipe.
  3. Select Calculate to see the unrounded cup conversion first, followed by a nearby amount rounded to the nearest one-eighth cup.
  4. For a recipe using metric cups, open Advanced options and choose Metric cup (250 mL). Turn on the loose-to-packed range only if you have both weighed values.
  5. Check the answer: if the recipe weight matches the entered weight for 1 US cup and US customary cups are selected, the conversion should be 1 cup.

Definitions

Grams (g): A unit of mass, meaning how much an ingredient weighs.

Cup: A unit of volume, meaning how much space an ingredient takes up.

Ingredient weight for 1 US cup: The grams in one US customary cup of the specific ingredient. This is the value used for the conversion.

US customary cup: A US household cup equal to 236.5882365 mL. [1]

Metric cup: A cup equal to 250 mL.

Loose or sifted weight: The grams in a cup measured with a lighter, less compact method.

Packed or scooped weight: The grams in a cup measured with a denser method.

Nearby measuring-cup amount: The converted amount rounded to the nearest one-eighth cup.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Expecting one grams-to-cups conversion to work for every ingredient.
Fix: Check Recipe weight and then recalculate. Enter the grams-per-cup value for the exact ingredient and its preparation.

Mistake: Using a flour weight-per-cup value for sugar, butter, or another ingredient.
Fix: Check Recipe weight and then recalculate. Find or weigh a cup value for the ingredient named in the recipe.

Mistake: Leaving US customary cups selected for a recipe that uses metric cups.
Fix: Check Recipe weight and then recalculate. Choose Metric cup in Advanced options before calculating. A metric cup is 250 mL.

Mistake: Treating the nearby measuring-cup amount as exact.
Fix: Check Recipe weight and then recalculate. It is rounded to the nearest one-eighth cup. Use the decimal cup amount or a scale when a small difference matters.

Mistake: Turning on the loose-to-packed range with only one method weight, or entering a packed value lower than the loose value.
Fix: Check Recipe weight and then recalculate. Enter both values, and make sure the packed or scooped weight is at least the loose or sifted weight.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • Grams measure mass and cups measure volume, so the answer depends on the entered ingredient weight for 1 US cup.
  • The result can differ if the ingredient's brand, moisture, temperature, or preparation differs from the source of the grams-per-cup value.
  • Sifting, spooning, scooping, and packing can change how much dry ingredient fits in a cup. Use the optional range only with values for those specific methods.
  • The converter supports US customary and metric cups only. Use the cup convention stated by the recipe.
  • The nearby measuring-cup amount is a rounded kitchen estimate and can differ from the decimal conversion.
  • For baking or other recipes where a small difference matters, follow the recipe's weight and use a kitchen scale.

Methodology

Calculation

The converter uses the entered grams-per-US-cup value to find the ingredient volume, then divides that volume by the selected cup size. A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL. [1]

cups = recipe weight (g) * 236.5882365 / (ingredient weight for 1 US cup (g) * selected cup volume (mL))

The selected cup volume is 236.5882365 mL for a US customary cup and 250 mL for a metric cup. The supporting ingredient-weight result uses the same cup-volume ratio.

ingredient weight for one selected cup (g) = ingredient weight for 1 US cup (g) * selected cup volume (mL) / 236.5882365

The nearby measuring-cup amount rounds the unrounded answer to the nearest one-eighth cup. Exact halfway values round upward.

nearby measuring-cup amount = round(cups * 8) / 8

Loose-to-packed range

When enabled, the calculator divides the recipe weight by each method-specific value. A heavier packed cup gives the lower cup estimate, while a lighter loose cup gives the higher estimate.

lower cup estimate = recipe weight (g) * 236.5882365 / (packed weight (g) * selected cup volume (mL))

higher cup estimate = recipe weight (g) * 236.5882365 / (loose weight (g) * selected cup volume (mL))

range width (cups) = higher cup estimate - lower cup estimate

Worked example

For 120 g of an ingredient that weighs 120 g per US customary cup, with US customary cups selected, the calculation is 120 * 236.5882365 / (120 * 236.5882365) = 1 cup. The nearby measuring-cup amount is also 1 cup.
