How to use our Cups to Tablespoons Converter

  1. Enter the amount from your recipe in US cups. You can type a decimal such as 0.5, a fraction such as 1/3, or a mixed fraction such as 1 1/2.
  2. Use a common-fraction button if it matches the recipe, or enter a different amount yourself.
  3. Click Calculate to see the equivalent US tablespoons.
  4. Use the tablespoons-and-teaspoons line if the tablespoon result has a fraction that is easier to measure with teaspoons.
  5. Check your result against a known amount: 1 US cup equals 16 tablespoons and 48 teaspoons.

Definitions

US cup: A US recipe volume measure. This converter uses US cups, not metric cups.

Tablespoon (tbsp): A US measuring-spoon volume. One US cup equals 16 tablespoons.

Teaspoon (tsp): A smaller US measuring-spoon volume. One tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons.

Mixed fraction: A whole number plus a fraction, such as 1 1/2. It means one and one-half cups.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a negative cup amount.
Fix: Enter 0 cups or more. Zero is valid when no ingredient is needed.

Mistake: Typing a fraction with 0 as the bottom number, such as 1/0.
Fix: Use a nonzero bottom number. A fraction with a bottom number of 0 is undefined.

Mistake: Entering an incomplete fraction such as 1//2.
Fix: Enter 1/2, or enter 1 1/2 for one and one-half cups.

Mistake: Using a comma as a decimal mark, such as 1,5.
Fix: Use a decimal point: enter 1.5. Use commas only for thousands grouping, such as 1,000.5.

Mistake: Using an ordinary dining spoon for the converted amount.
Fix: Use measuring spoons. Dining spoon sizes vary and are not reliable recipe measures. [1]

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • Results use US household measures: 1 US cup equals 16 tablespoons, and 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons.
  • A metric cup is a different volume from a US cup. Check which measurement system the recipe uses before converting.
  • The spoon form gives an equal volume. Ingredient packing, leveling, and sifting can still change the amount used in cooking.
  • Use measuring cups and measuring spoons. Ordinary flatware is not standardized for recipe measurement. [1]
  • This converter changes volume only. It cannot convert cups to ounces or grams because an ingredient's weight depends on the ingredient and how it is measured.

Methodology

Conversion method

The calculator changes the entered US cup amount into tablespoons and teaspoons using fixed household-measure relationships.

tablespoons = cups x 16

teaspoons = cups x 48

For the spoon form, it takes the whole tablespoons first. It then converts the remaining fraction of a tablespoon into teaspoons, using 3 teaspoons per tablespoon.

Worked example

For 1/3 cup, multiply 1/3 by 16. That equals 5 1/3 tablespoons. The remaining 1/3 tablespoon equals 1 teaspoon, so the spoon form is 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon. Multiplying 1/3 by 48 also gives 16 teaspoons.

Calculation choices

Decimals, simple fractions, and mixed fractions are converted to one cup value before calculation. The calculator keeps the unrounded value while calculating so a small nonzero amount does not display as zero.

Measurement basis

The calculation uses US household measuring units. It assumes standard measuring cups and spoons; ingredient density, packing, and cooking changes are outside this volume conversion. [1]
