How to use our Closet Lighting Calculator

  1. Enter Closet length (feet) and Closet width (feet) using the inside floor size of the closet.
  2. Pick a Brightness goal, then enter Lumens from each fixture from the bulb or fixture package.
  3. Open Advanced options if you want to change Extra light allowance (percent), estimate energy cost, change Number format, or run the clearance check.
  4. Click Calculate and compare Recommended light output with Installed light output and Estimated brightness in the closet.
  5. Sanity-check the plan: if Fixtures to install seems too high, try brighter fixtures, lighter closet finishes, or better fixture placement before buying.

Definitions

Lumens: The amount of light made by a bulb or fixture. Use lumens, not watts, to compare brightness.

Foot-candles: Light reaching each square foot of closet floor or shelf area. One foot-candle means 1 lumen per square foot.

Extra light allowance: Added light for shadows, dark walls, deep shelves, dirt, aging, and imperfect fixture placement.

Installed light output: The total lumens from the whole-number fixture count the calculator recommends.

Estimated brightness in the closet: The estimated foot-candles after the same light allowance is applied back to the installed lumens.

Clearance: The measured space from the light or lens to stored clothes, shelves, boxes, or other items.

kWh: Kilowatt-hour, the billing unit for electricity. A 1000 watt load running for 1 hour uses 1 kWh.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Using watts in Lumens from each fixture.
Fix: Enter the lumen rating from the package in Lumens from each fixture; watts belong in Watts used by each fixture.

Mistake: Measuring outside wall dimensions for Closet length (feet) or Closet width (feet).
Fix: Measure the inside usable closet area so Closet area is not too large.

Mistake: Leaving Extra light allowance (percent) at 0 for dark shelves, deep storage, or shadowy corners.
Fix: Increase Extra light allowance (percent) when the closet has dark finishes, packed clothing, or fixtures that do not spread light evenly.

Mistake: Picking Quick storage as the Brightness goal for a closet where you choose outfits every day.
Fix: Use Daily closet, Walk-in dressing area, or Color matching or detail work when you need more useful light.

Mistake: Entering Distance to stored items (inches) without choosing Fixture type for clearance check.
Fix: Select the fixture type first, then enter the measured Distance to stored items (inches).

Mistake: Using Electricity price ($ per kWh) without entering Watts used by each fixture.
Fix: Enter Watts used by each fixture, Use time (hours per day), and Electricity price ($ per kWh) to see Estimated yearly energy cost.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The lumen result is a planning estimate, not a measured lighting design. Real brightness changes with fixture beam spread, mounting height, shelf layout, wall color, doors, and shadows.
  • The Brightness goal targets are practical closet planning values. They are not a code requirement and are not a substitute for a professional lighting plan.
  • Closet area uses length times width. Very deep shelves, stacked boxes, mirrors, and vertical storage may need extra task lighting even if the floor-area estimate looks bright enough.
  • Extra light allowance is applied as a simple percentage. It does not model exact lamp aging, dirt buildup, or fixture photometry.
  • The clearance check is a basic screening check for the selected Fixture type for clearance check. Local electrical code, fixture listing, and inspector decisions can be stricter.
  • Open bulb or pendant fixture choices are treated as unsuitable for a clothes-closet clearance plan in the calculator output.
  • Estimated yearly energy cost assumes the same Use time (hours per day) every day, the entered Electricity price ($ per kWh), and no dimming or occupancy-sensor savings.

Methodology

Core lighting math

The calculator first finds the closet floor area from the two inside dimensions.

area_sq_ft = closet_length_ft * closet_width_ft

Next it assigns a target brightness from the selected Brightness goal: Quick storage is 10 foot-candles, Daily closet is 20 foot-candles, Walk-in dressing area is 30 foot-candles, and Color matching or detail work is 50 foot-candles.

target_fc = selected value from {storage: 10, daily: 20, walkin: 30, detail: 50}

Recommended light output adds the optional allowance for dark finishes, deep storage, shadows, aging, and dirt.

recommended_lumens = area_sq_ft * target_fc * (1 + light_allowance_percent / 100)

Fixtures to install is rounded up because you cannot install part of a fixture.

fixture_count = ceiling(recommended_lumens / lumens_per_fixture)

Installed light output is the whole fixture count multiplied by the lumen rating of one fixture.

installed_lumens = fixture_count * lumens_per_fixture

Estimated brightness in the closet applies the same allowance back to the installed lumens so the allowance has one consistent meaning.

estimated_maintained_foot_candles = installed_lumens / area_sq_ft / (1 + light_allowance_percent / 100)

Energy math

Energy outputs are shown only when Watts used by each fixture, Use time (hours per day), and Electricity price ($ per kWh) are entered and valid.

total_watts = fixture_count * fixture_watts

annual_energy_cost = fixture_count * fixture_watts * hours_per_day / 1000 * 365 * electricity_price

Clearance check

If a checkable fixture type and Distance to stored items (inches) are entered, the calculator compares the distance with the built-in clearance value for that fixture type.

clearance_ok = distance_to_storage_in >= required_clearance_in

The clearance values used are 12 inches for surface enclosed LED or incandescent, 6 inches for recessed enclosed LED or incandescent, 6 inches for surface or recessed fluorescent, and 0 inches only when the fixture is listed for closet storage space.

Worked example

For a 6 foot by 2 foot daily closet with 800 lumens per fixture and a 15 percent extra light allowance, the area is 12 square feet and the target is 20 foot-candles.

recommended_lumens = 12 * 20 * (1 + 15 / 100) = 276

fixture_count = ceiling(276 / 800) = 1

installed_lumens = 1 * 800 = 800

estimated_maintained_foot_candles = 800 / 12 / 1.15 = 57.97

That means one 800 lumen fixture beats the 276 lumen recommendation for that small closet, but placement still matters because a single fixture can leave shelves or corners in shadow.
