How to use our Drive vs Ship Car Cost Calculator
- Enter the one-way route in Trip distance (miles) and the navigation estimate in Drive time (hours).
- Add your car's Fuel economy (MPG), route gas price, and any planned hotel nights and nightly price.
- Paste the Car shipping quote ($), the passenger ticket cost, and the carrier's Car shipping time (days).
- Open Advanced options for costs that apply to your trip, such as tolls, transfers, rental car, added food, or fuel-excluded vehicle wear.
- Check that the lower-cost message matches the signed All-in cost difference; a negative amount means driving costs less, while a positive amount means shipping costs less.
Definitions
MPG: Miles per gallon, which tells how far the car travels on one gallon of fuel.
Drive cash total: Estimated trip money paid for fuel, hotels, tolls, parking, and added road-trip meals. It does not include vehicle wear.
Vehicle wear: A personal estimate of added non-fuel cost per mile, such as wear, maintenance, tires, and lost value from the trip.
All-in cost difference: Drive total with optional vehicle wear minus the ship and passenger travel total. A negative number means driving costs less.
Car shipping time: The carrier's estimated time for the car from pickup to delivery, separate from the traveler's trip.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering 0 for Fuel economy (MPG) or using gallons per 100 miles instead of MPG.
Fix: Enter a positive MPG value from your vehicle label, manual, dashboard, or fuel records.
Mistake: Comparing Car shipping quote ($) only with fuel and skipping Passenger travel after shipping ($).
Fix: Include the airfare, train, bus, or other main trip cost needed because the car is shipped.
Mistake: Adding a rate that already includes fuel to Extra vehicle wear (cents per mile).
Fix: Enter only added wear, maintenance, tires, and lost value beyond fuel because fuel is calculated separately.
Mistake: Treating Car shipping time (days) as your own travel time.
Fix: Use the carrier's pickup-to-delivery estimate for that field and use Drive time (hours) only for the driving route.
Mistake: Counting normal at-home food spending in Added food budget ($ per person per day).
Fix: Include only extra food spending caused by the road trip, or leave the field blank.
Mistake: Entering a hotel charge while Hotel nights while driving is 0.
Fix: The calculator correctly makes hotel cost $0 at zero nights; change the nights only if an overnight stay is planned.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The calculator uses the route, prices, and shipping quote you enter. It does not find a route or generate a carrier price.
- Fuel cost is an estimate based on miles, MPG, and gas price. Weather, traffic, hills, speed, cargo, idling, and driving style can change actual fuel use.
- Hotel cost is zero when Hotel nights while driving is 0, even if a hotel price is entered.
- Optional vehicle wear is a planning estimate, not a bill. It must exclude fuel to avoid counting fuel twice.
- Shipping quotes can change with vehicle condition, transport type, pickup timing, and location accessibility. Confirm final price and terms with the carrier or broker.
- The time fields are supplied estimates. Drive time excludes long stops and sleep, while shipping time is for the car rather than the traveler.
Methodology
Cost calculation
Fuel is estimated from route miles, MPG, and gas price. Hotel cost uses paid hotel nights and the nightly price. Blank optional cost fields count as $0.
fuel cost = (trip distance / fuel economy) * gas price
hotel cost = hotel nights * hotel price
drive days = hotel nights + 1
added meal cost = people on the drive * drive days * added food budget
drive cash total = fuel cost + hotel cost + route tolls + drive-side parking + added meal cost
ship and passenger travel total = car shipping quote + passenger travel after shipping + airport or station transfers + rental car while waiting
vehicle wear cost = trip distance * extra vehicle wear / 100
drive total with optional vehicle wear = drive cash total + vehicle wear cost
all-in cost difference = drive total with optional vehicle wear - ship and passenger travel total
cash cost difference = drive cash total - ship and passenger travel total
How to read the difference
A negative difference means driving is cheaper by that amount. A positive difference means shipping is cheaper. A zero difference means the entered costs tie. The cash difference excludes vehicle wear, while the all-in difference includes it only when you enter a rate.
Worked example
For 1,500 miles at 30 MPG and $4.006 per gallon, fuel cost is (1,500 / 30) * 4.006 = $200.30. With two $140 hotel nights, $60 tolls, $40 parking, and $270 in added meals, drive cash total is $850.30. If the ship-side total is $1,630 and optional wear is 12 cents per mile, vehicle wear is $180 and the all-in difference is $1,030.30 - $1,630 = -$599.70, so driving costs $599.70 less under those entries.
Calculation boundaries
MPG and drive time must be greater than zero. Hotel nights must be a whole number of zero or more. Costs and shipping transit days cannot be negative. If an added food budget is entered, people on the drive must be a whole number of at least 1. The calculator displays entered drive hours and shipping days separately and does not convert one into the other.
