- The converter is for nonnegative lengths. Blank, nonnumeric, or negative required inputs are errors.
- It uses the standard inch-centimeter factor of 2.54 cm per inch and 12 inches per foot. It is not meant for old survey-foot work.
- Round the inches part to changes the everyday feet-and-inches display only. Total feet, Total inches, and Total centimeters still show decimal conversion values.
- If the rounded Inches part reaches 12, the converter adds 1 to Feet part and shows 0 inches. This avoids confusing outputs like 5 ft 12 in.
- Feet and inches to centimeters mode allows Inches (in) values of 12 or more because some people enter a total leftover value by mistake. The result is normalized.
- Real measuring tools and clothing or height forms may require a specific rounding rule, so match Round the inches part to the rule you need.
Methodology
Conversion factors
The converter uses the standard relationship that 1 inch is 2.54 centimeters [1]. Since 1 foot has 12 inches, 1 foot is 30.48 centimeters.
Centimeters to feet and inches
First, the centimeter value is converted to total inches and total feet.
total_inches = centimeters / 2.54
total_feet = centimeters / 30.48
Then total inches is split into whole feet and leftover inches.
feet_whole = floor(total_inches / 12)
leftover_inches = total_inches - feet_whole * 12
The leftover inches are rounded using the selected step. The step is 0.1 for 1 decimal place, 0.01 for 2 decimal places, 1 for whole inches, 0.5 for 1/2 inch, 0.25 for 1/4 inch, 0.125 for 1/8 inch, and 0.0625 for 1/16 inch.
rounded_inches = round(leftover_inches / step) * step
If rounded inches becomes 12, the converter increases the feet part by 1 and changes rounded inches to 0.
Feet and inches to centimeters
The reverse direction first turns the feet and inches entries into one total inches value, then converts inches to centimeters.
total_inches = feet * 12 + inches
centimeters = total_inches * 2.54
Worked examples
For 180 cm with the default 1 decimal place inch rounding:
180 / 2.54 = 70.8661417 total inches
floor(70.8661417 / 12) = 5 feet
70.8661417 - 5 * 12 = 10.8661417 leftover inches
round(10.8661417 / 0.1) * 0.1 = 10.9 inches
So the everyday result is 5 ft 10.9 in, with supporting totals of 5.9055 ft and 70.8661 in when 4 decimals are selected. For 5 ft 9 in, the reverse calculation uses 69 total inches and returns 175.26 cm.
