Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator converts area, not length. Use 2.54 to convert inches to centimeters, and use 6.4516 to convert square inches to square centimeters.
  • The dimensions path applies only to a flat rectangle with perpendicular sides. It does not find the area of circles, triangles, irregular shapes, or curved surfaces.
  • Both rectangle measurements must be in inches. Convert another length unit to inches before using the dimensions path.
  • Zero is valid and converts to zero. Negative values are rejected because they cannot describe a physical measured area.
  • The conversion factor is exact, but displayed results may be rounded to the selected number of decimal places.

Calculation method

In known-area mode, the entered square-inch measurement is converted directly. In rectangle mode, the calculator first multiplies length by width to find the source area.

source area (sq in) = length (in) * width (in)

It then multiplies the source area by 6.4516 square centimeters per square inch.

area (sq cm) = source area (sq in) * 6.4516

Worked example

A rectangle that is 8.5 inches long and 11 inches wide has an area of 93.5 sq in. Multiplying 93.5 by 6.4516 gives 603.2246 sq cm.

8.5 * 11 = 93.5 sq in

93.5 * 6.4516 = 603.2246 sq cm

The factor is exact because 1 inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters, and 2.54 multiplied by 2.54 equals 6.4516.
