- Sanity-check the split result: the Leftover pounds after whole stone should be at least 0 and less than 14, and the decimal part of Weight in stone is not a pounds value.

Definitions
Stone (st): A weight unit equal to 14 pounds.
Decimal stone: The full weight written as one stone value, such as 11.43 st.

Kilograms (kg): The metric weight unit shown as an equivalent to the same entered weight.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Typing a negative number in Weight (lb) .
Fix: Enter 0 or a positive weight only. This converter rejects negative values.
Mistake: Reading Weight in stone as if the decimal part were pounds, such as thinking 11.36 st means 11 st 36 lb.
Fix: Use Weight in stone and pounds for the familiar split format, and read the Quick note if you are unsure.
Mistake: Changing Decimal places and expecting Weight in stone and pounds to change the same way.
Fix: Remember that Decimal places only rounds Weight in stone . The split result still uses whole stone plus leftover pounds.
Mistake: Expecting Leftover pounds after whole stone to be 14 lb.
Fix: If the leftover reaches 14 lb, that becomes 1 more stone, so the leftover amount should stay below 14 lb.
Mistake: Entering text or leaving Weight (lb) blank.
Fix: Enter a valid number in Weight (lb) , such as 10, 154, or 154.5.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This converter is for weight-unit conversion only. It does not judge whether a weight is healthy, typical, or realistic.
- Weight (lb) must be 0 or more. Negative values are blocked because a physical body weight or object weight is usually entered as a non-negative amount.
- Weight in stone is rounded to the selected Decimal places, so the displayed decimal-stone value can differ slightly from the exact fraction.
- Weight in stone and pounds depends on groups of exactly 14 lb per stone. If you expected the decimal part of stone to mean pounds, use the split result instead.
- Very small display differences can happen because rounded output is shown for readability, while the conversion itself uses the exact constants in the formulas.
Methodology
How the conversion works
The calculator starts with the entered Weight (lb). It converts that value into decimal stone, then separates the same weight into whole stone plus leftover pounds, and also converts the pounds into kilograms.
stone_decimal = pounds / 14
whole_stone = floor(pounds / 14)
leftover_pounds = pounds - 14 * whole_stone
kilograms = pounds * 0.45359237
Worked example
Suppose Weight (lb) is 160.
stone_decimal = 160 / 14 = 11.428571...
whole_stone = floor(160 / 14) = 11
leftover_pounds = 160 - 14 * 11 = 6
kilograms = 160 * 0.45359237 = 72.5747792
So the same weight can be shown as 11.43 st if rounded to 2 decimal places, or as 11 st 6 lb in split form. Those mean the same weight. The decimal part 0.43 st is part of a stone, not 43 lb.
Display choices
Weight in stone is rounded using the chosen Decimal places. Leftover pounds after whole stone is based on the unrounded input so decimal-pound entries like 154.5 lb stay accurate in the split result.
Assumptions used
The calculation assumes 1 stone = 14 pounds and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms. Negative weights are rejected, and 0 lb returns 0 st, 0 st 0 lb, 0 lb leftover, and 0 kg.
