How to use our Millimeters to Feet Converter
- Choose Convert to, then enter a number in the matching active field: Length (mm) for feet output or Length (ft) for millimeter output.
- If you want a tape-measure style answer, open Advanced options and leave Show feet and inches on, then pick a Round inches to step such as 1/16 inch.
- Click Calculate to see Converted length first, followed by Feet (decimal), Inches (total), and sometimes Feet and inches.
- Sanity-check the result: 304.8 mm should equal exactly 1 ft, 1000 mm should be a little over 3.28 ft, and 2.5 ft should equal 762 mm.
Definitions
Length (mm): The starting length in millimeters. Use this when Convert to is set to Feet.
Length (ft): The starting length in feet. Use this when Convert to is set to Millimeters.
Feet (decimal): A length written in feet with a decimal part, such as 3.28084 ft.
Feet and inches: A length split into whole feet plus leftover inches, such as 3 ft 3.375 in.
Inches (total): The whole length written only in inches instead of feet plus inches.
Round inches to: The measuring-step used for the Feet and inches display, such as 1/16 inch.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a value in Length (mm) while Convert to is set to Millimeters.
Fix: When Convert to is Millimeters, enter your number in Length (ft) instead.
Mistake: Reading Feet (decimal) as if the digits after the decimal are inches.
Fix: Use Feet and inches or Inches (total) if you want a tape-measure style reading.
Mistake: Forgetting that Round inches to changes only the shown Feet and inches display.
Fix: Use Converted length or Feet (decimal) for the exact conversion, and use the rounding setting only for the inches breakdown.
Mistake: Thinking a negative Converted length is an error.
Fix: Negative values are allowed for signed differences, so a negative result simply means the entered length was below zero.
Mistake: Entering text, blanks, or a non-number and expecting a result.
Fix: Enter a real number in the active field, either Length (mm) or Length (ft) , then calculate again.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The converter uses the exact relation 1 ft = 304.8 mm, so differences from other tools usually come from rounding, not from the base conversion.
- Feet and inches is only shown for millimeters-to-feet conversions when Show feet and inches is set to Yes.
- The Round inches to setting affects the displayed inches breakdown, but it does not change the underlying decimal-feet or millimeter conversion.
- Negative values are allowed and kept negative because signed length differences can be valid in math, design offsets, or comparisons.
- If inch rounding pushes the inches part to 12, the calculator carries 1 to the feet part and resets inches to 0.
- Blank entries, non-numeric text, NaN, and Infinity are invalid inputs and should be corrected before calculating.

The calculator switches between two exact length-conversion rules based on Convert to.
ft = mm / 304.8
mm = ft x 304.8
in_total = ft x 12
Feet-and-inches breakdown
When the target is feet and Show feet and inches is on, the calculator first finds decimal feet, then splits that into whole feet and leftover inches.
whole_ft = floor(ft)
rem_in = (ft - whole_ft) x 12
If you chose a rounding step in Round inches to, the remaining inches are rounded to that step. If rounding makes the inches part equal 12, the calculator adds 1 to the feet part and sets inches to 0.
Mini-example
Example: with Length (mm) = 1000, decimal feet is 1000 / 304.8 = 3.280839895. Total inches is 3.280839895 x 12 = 39.37007874. The feet-and-inches breakdown is 3 ft plus 0.280839895 x 12 = 3.37007874 in, which becomes 3 ft 3.375 in when rounded to 1/16 inch.
Calculation choices
The active input only depends on direction. For feet output, the calculator reads Length (mm) and ignores Length (ft). For millimeter output, it reads Length (ft) and ignores Length (mm). Zero stays zero, and negative values keep their sign.
Assumptions and limits
This tool is for unit conversion only. It does not account for field tolerances, material expansion, measuring-tape hook movement, or project-specific rounding rules, so a shop or construction document may round the displayed inches differently from this calculator.
