How to use our Liters to Centiliters Calculator
- Choose the direction that matches the unit beside the number you have.
- Enter the starting volume, such as 1.5 L or 250 cL.
- Click Calculate to see the converted volume in the target unit.
- Check the size of the answer: converting L to cL makes the number 100 times larger, while converting cL to L makes it 100 times smaller.
- Open Advanced options if you need a different number of decimal places in the displayed answer.

Definitions
Liter (L): A metric unit of volume.
Centiliter (cL): A metric unit of volume equal to one hundredth of a liter.
Conversion factor: A fixed number used to change from one unit to another. For liters and centiliters, the factor is exactly 100 cL per L. [1]
Decimal places: Digits shown to the right of the decimal point. This setting changes only how the answer is displayed.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Multiplying by 10 instead of 100 when converting L to cL.
Fix: Multiply by 100, or move the decimal point two places right. For example, 1.5 L is 150 cL.
Mistake: Using the L to cL direction for a number already written in cL.
Fix: Choose "Centiliters (cL) to liters (L)" before entering a cL value.
Mistake: Typing a unit that conflicts with the selected direction, such as "2 L" in cL to L conversion.
Fix: Enter a cL value, or switch the direction so it matches the unit in your source.
Mistake: Writing 1,01 when you mean one point zero one.
Fix: Use a decimal point: type 1.01. Use commas only for thousands, such as 1,000.
Mistake: Thinking a rounded display changes the conversion.
Fix: Change Result decimal places if needed. The exact relationship remains 1 L = 100 cL.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This calculator accepts volumes of 0 or more; negative values are not accepted.
- The starting value must use the selected source unit: L for L to cL, or cL for cL to L.
- The conversion factor is exact, but the selected decimal setting can round the displayed answer.
- This tool converts volume units only. It does not convert mass, weight, or recipe ingredient amounts.
- A very small nonzero value can round to zero at a low decimal setting; the calculator shows extra detail in that case.
Methodology
Conversion rule
A centiliter is one hundredth of a liter, so one liter contains exactly 100 centiliters. [1]
cL = L x 100
L = cL / 100
Worked example
To convert 1.5 L, multiply by 100.
1.5 x 100 = 150 cL
For the reverse direction, divide by 100:
250 cL / 100 = 2.5 L.
Calculation limits
The calculator accepts zero and positive finite volumes. It rejects negative values, malformed numbers, and a typed unit that does not match the selected direction. Decimal places affect display rounding only; they do not change the exact factor of 100.
