How to use our Dog Age Calculator
- Enter completed years in Dog age (years). If you only know the age in months, leave this field blank.
- Enter the months left after the completed years in Extra dog age (months). Use a whole number from 0 through 11.
- Choose Expected adult size. For a puppy, choose its likely full-grown weight group, not its current weight.

Definitions
Dog age: The dog's calendar age, entered as completed years plus extra months.
Expected adult size: The dog's likely full-grown weight group: small is 20 lb or less, medium is 21 to 50 lb, and large or giant is 51 lb or more.
Human-age equivalent: An approximate comparison of a dog's calendar age with a human age. It is not a biological measurement.
Completed human-age years: The whole-year part of the rounded human-age estimate.
Extra human-age months: The months remaining after the completed human-age years are removed from the rounded estimate.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering 12 or more in Extra dog age (months).
Fix: Add each full 12 months to Dog age (years), then enter only 0 through 11 extra months.
Mistake: Typing a decimal such as 1.5 in Dog age (years).
Fix: Enter 1 year and 6 extra months instead.
Mistake: Leaving both age fields blank.
Fix: Check Dog age (years) and then recalculate. Enter years, months, or both. One blank age part counts as zero only when the other part is filled in.
Mistake: Choosing a puppy's current weight for Expected adult size.

- The model uses the same pattern for every dog through age 2, then changes only by expected adult size.
- Breed, genetics, health history, body condition, activity, diet, and veterinary care can make an individual dog differ from this estimate.
- For a growing puppy or mixed-breed dog, uncertainty about expected adult size can change the estimate after age 2.
- An age estimate from a shelter or an unknown birth date may already be approximate before it is entered.
Methodology
Calculation method
The calculator combines completed dog years and extra months into one calendar age. If one age field is blank, it counts as zero only when the other age field has a value.
dog_age_years_decimal = dog_age_years + dog_age_months / 12
The model assigns 15 human years at age 1 and 24 human years at age 2. After age 2, it adds 4 human years for each dog year for a small dog, 5 for a medium dog, or 6 for a large or giant dog. Partial dog years are calculated as a fraction of a year.

Years and months
The main estimate is shown to one decimal place. The calculator also converts the unrounded estimate to human-age months, rounds to the nearest month, and then separates completed years from extra months.

Worked example
A large or giant dog aged 5 years 5 months is 5.4167 dog years. The first 2 dog years equal 24 human years. The remaining 3.4167 dog years add 20.5 human years at 6 per year, giving 44.5 human years, or 44 years 6 months after rounding to the nearest month.
