Enter a breeding date to estimate a llama due date, likely birth window, broad normal range, and simple pregnancy timeline.
Advanced options
How to use our Llama Due Date Calculator
- Enter the Breeding date, then choose Animal. Leave it on llama unless you are comparing with alpaca.
- Open Advanced options if you want to change Date style in results or turn Show weekday (like Mon) on or off.
- Click Calculate to see the Estimated due date, Likely birth window, Broad normal range, and Earliest pregnancy-check dates.
- Sanity-check the result by comparing Days pregnant today and Time until estimated due date. If either one seems off, recheck the breeding date and make sure it is not in the future.

Definitions
Breeding date: The calendar date when mating happened or when conception most likely happened.
Animal: The species used for the estimate. Llama uses a 350-day average term, while alpaca uses a 335-day average term.
Estimated due date: The single best planning date based on the average gestation length.
Likely birth window: A practical 14-day planning window centered on the average due date, from 7 days before to 7 days after.
Broad normal range: A wider date range based on 332 to 352 days of gestation.
Earliest pregnancy-check dates: Early milestone dates after breeding for behavior-based checking, ultrasound, and llama palpation timing.
Days pregnant today: The number of whole days from the Breeding date to today.
Time until estimated due date: The number of whole days from today to the Estimated due date. A negative number means that date has already passed.
Date style in results: The date format used when results are displayed.
Show weekday (like Mon): Adds the weekday next to result dates for easier scheduling.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Leaving Breeding date blank or entering the wrong calendar day.
Fix: Enter one exact Breeding date . If there were several breedings, use the date most likely tied to conception.
Mistake: Choosing the wrong Animal and then trusting the Estimated due date .
Fix: Set Animal to llama for a llama pregnancy. Use alpaca only when you want the alpaca comparison.
Mistake: Treating the Estimated due date as the only possible birth day.
Fix: Plan around the Likely birth window first, then keep the Broad normal range in mind for a wider watch period.
Mistake: Thinking a negative Time until estimated due date means the calculator broke.
Fix: A negative value means the estimated due date has already passed. Recheck Breeding date if that does not match the real timeline.
Mistake: Reading Earliest pregnancy-check dates as a guarantee of pregnancy confirmation on those exact days.
Fix: Use those dates as early planning checkpoints and follow a veterinarian's advice for actual confirmation timing.
Mistake: Forgetting that Date style in results and Show weekday (like Mon) only change how dates look, not the calculation.
Fix: Use those options for easier reading, but base your interpretation on the actual date ranges and day counts.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This tool is calendar-based. It estimates dates from the entered breeding date and does not adjust for individual animal differences.
- The Estimated due date is based on an average term, so birth may happen before or after that single date.
- The Likely birth window is a planning aid centered on the average date. It is not the same thing as the full biological range.
- The Broad normal range is wider and may overlap differently with the planning window depending on species settings and the breeding date entered.
- If the female was bred more than once, the result is only as good as the Breeding date you choose.
- Days pregnant today and Time until estimated due date use whole-day local date math, so values can differ by 1 day around midnight or across time zones.
- The calculator blocks future breeding dates because a pregnancy timeline cannot start after today.
- Earliest pregnancy-check dates are scheduling checkpoints, not proof of pregnancy or health status.
Methodology
How the calculator works
The tool starts with the entered Breeding date and adds a species-based gestation length in whole calendar days.
estimated_due_date = breeding_date + avg_gestation_days
For Animal = llama, avg_gestation_days = 350. For Animal = alpaca, avg_gestation_days = 335.
Birth windows
The tighter planning window is centered on the average due date and extends 7 days on each side.
window_start = breeding_date + (avg_gestation_days - 7)
window_end = breeding_date + (avg_gestation_days + 7)
The wider normal range uses the same lower and upper limits for both llama and alpaca in this calculator.
normal_start = breeding_date + 332
normal_end = breeding_date + 352
Pregnancy-check dates
The calculator also adds simple milestone dates after breeding.
behavior_check = breeding_date + 15
ultrasound_check = breeding_date + 21
palpation_check_llama = breeding_date + 45
The palpation date is shown only when Animal is set to llama.
Day counts
Two signed day totals help you place the pregnancy on today's calendar.
days_pregnant_today = floor((today - breeding_date) / 1 day)
time_remaining = floor((estimated_due_date - today) / 1 day)
A negative Time until estimated due date means the estimated due date has already passed.
Mini example
If the Breeding date is 2026-03-23 and Animal is llama, the calculator adds 350 days.
estimated_due_date = 2026-03-23 + 350 days = 2027-03-08
likely_birth_window = 2027-03-01 to 2027-03-15
broad_normal_range = 2027-02-18 to 2027-03-10
behavior_check = 2026-04-07; ultrasound_check = 2026-04-13; palpation_check_llama = 2026-05-07
Assumptions built into the math
The calculator uses true date arithmetic, so leap years and month-end rollovers are handled by calendar-day addition rather than manual month counting. Result display options such as Date style in results and Show weekday (like Mon) change formatting only, not the underlying math.
