How to use our Vegetable Yield Calculator
- Choose "Number of plants," "Planted bed area," or "Row length" under "Start with" based on the measurement in your garden plan.
- Enter the fields shown for that method, including a seasonal yield rate for the same vegetable and, when possible, the same variety.
- For "Row length," select whether the rate applies to "1 foot of row" or "10 feet of row" before entering the rate from your source.
- Open "Advanced options" if you want to reduce the harvest for produce you expect will not be usable or change the displayed decimal places.
- Select "Calculate," then check that the planting quantity and yield-rate basis match before using the estimate for planning.
Definitions
Seasonal yield per plant: Expected harvest weight from one plant over a growing season, measured in pounds per plant.
Planted bed area: Square feet used by one vegetable, excluding paths and other crops.
Space between plants: Center-to-center distance between plants within a row, measured in inches.
Space between rows: Center-to-center distance between planted rows, measured in inches.
Row yield rate: Expected seasonal harvest weight for a stated length of planted row.
Expected usable share: The percent of the estimated harvest expected to remain usable after damaged, unripe, or unusable produce is removed.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Using a pounds-per-plant rate with "Row length."
Fix: Use a rate stated per foot or per 10 feet of row for the row-length method.
Mistake: Choosing "1 foot of row" when the source rate is for 10 feet.
Fix: Match "Row yield rate applies to" to the unit heading beside the rate in your record or reference table.
Mistake: Including paths or space planted with another crop in "Planted bed area (sq ft)."
Fix: Enter only the area actually planted with the vegetable you are estimating.
Mistake: Using the width of an outside walkway as row spacing.
Fix: Enter the center-to-center distance between planted rows.
Mistake: Treating the estimate as a guaranteed harvest.
Fix: Compare it with your past harvest records and revise the yield rate when local growing conditions differ.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This is a planning estimate based on the yield rate you enter, not a guaranteed harvest.
- Actual yield can change with variety, weather, soil, watering, pests, disease, planting date, and harvest frequency.
- The planted-area method assumes rectangular spacing and that the entered area is fully available to the selected vegetable; it can produce a fractional plant estimate near bed edges.
- Use a yield rate with the same basis as the selected method: pounds per plant, pounds per foot, or pounds per 10 feet.
- A blank "Expected usable share (%)" is treated as 100%, while an entered share must be from 0% through 100%.
Methodology
Calculation method
The calculator reads only the fields for the planting method you choose. It calculates harvest before any usable-share adjustment, then converts the final pound estimate to kilograms.
Plant harvest (lb) = number of plants x seasonal yield per plant
Estimated plants from area = planted area (sq ft) x 144 / (plant spacing (in) x row spacing (in))
Area harvest (lb) = estimated plants from area x seasonal yield per plant
Row harvest (lb) = total row length (ft) x row yield rate / rate basis length (ft)
The rate basis length is 1 for a rate per foot and 10 for a rate per 10 feet. This keeps a rate of 18 lb per 10 feet different from 18 lb per foot.
Estimated seasonal harvest (lb) = base harvest x usable fraction
A blank usable-share field uses a usable fraction of 1. An entered share of 80% uses a usable fraction of 0.8.

Worked example
For 12 plants with a seasonal yield of 8 lb per plant, the base harvest is 12 x 8 = 96 lb. With the usable-share field blank, the estimate stays 96 lb, which converts to about 43.5 kg.
