How to use our Tiered Electricity Bill Calculator

  1. Enter Monthly electricity use from your bill in kWh.
  2. Enter Tier 1 covers the first, Tier 1 energy rate, Tier 2 covers the next, Tier 2 energy rate, and Rate after tiers 1 and 2 from your rate sheet.
  3. Open Advanced options if you want to include Fixed monthly charge, Other fees or credits, and Tax rate.
  4. Click Calculate and compare Estimated total bill with Energy charges before fees and tax to see how much the extra bill items changed the estimate.
  5. Sanity-check the result: Average cost for each kWh should usually fall near your entered tier rates after fixed charges, fees, credits, and tax are included.

Definitions

kWh: Kilowatt-hour, the unit utilities use to measure electricity use over time [1].

Tier 1 covers the first: The first block of monthly kWh charged at the Tier 1 energy rate.

Tier 2 covers the next: The next block of kWh after Tier 1, charged at the Tier 2 energy rate.

Rate after tiers 1 and 2: The per-kWh price for use above the Tier 1 and Tier 2 blocks.

Fixed monthly charge: A charge added once per billing month, often separate from energy use.

Other fees or credits: A signed dollar amount; positive adds to the bill and negative reduces it.

Average cost for each kWh: Estimated total bill divided by Monthly electricity use, so it includes tier mixing and extra bill items.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a daily or yearly number in Monthly electricity use.
Fix: Use the kWh for one billing month, or convert the time period before calculating.

Mistake: Putting the total Tier 2 ending point in Tier 2 covers the next.
Fix: Enter only the extra kWh in Tier 2, not Tier 1 plus Tier 2 together.

Mistake: Typing 15 in Tier 1 energy rate when the rate is 15 cents per kWh.
Fix: Enter dollars per kWh, such as 0.15.

Mistake: Entering a bill credit as a positive number in Other fees or credits.
Fix: Enter credits as negative numbers, such as -10.

Mistake: Reading Estimated total bill as the energy-only charge.
Fix: Use Energy charges before fees and tax for the tiered energy part only.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The calculator uses the tier limits and rates you enter. It does not look up utility-specific rate tables.
  • Tax rate is applied to Energy charges before fees and tax plus Fixed monthly charge plus Other fees or credits. Real bills may tax only some line items.
  • Other fees or credits is one combined dollar entry. Separate utility riders, minimum bills, demand charges, time-of-use prices, and seasonal rules are not modeled.
  • Average cost for each kWh is not available when Monthly electricity use is 0 kWh because dividing by zero is not valid.
  • A negative Estimated total bill can happen if credits exceed charges under the entered values. Check large credits against your actual bill.
  • Rounding can differ from a utility bill because utilities may round each line item before adding the total.

Methodology

How the bill is calculated

The calculator first splits Monthly electricity use into three kWh blocks. Tier 1 is capped by Tier 1 covers the first. Tier 2 is capped by Tier 2 covers the next. Any remaining use is charged at Rate after tiers 1 and 2.

tier1_kwh = min(usage_kwh, tier1_limit_kwh)

tier2_kwh = min(max(usage_kwh - tier1_limit_kwh, 0), tier2_width_kwh)

tier3_kwh = max(usage_kwh - tier1_limit_kwh - tier2_width_kwh, 0)

Each kWh block is multiplied by its dollar-per-kWh rate. Those three amounts are added to get Energy charges before fees and tax.

energy_charges_before_fees = tier1_kwh * tier1_rate + tier2_kwh * tier2_rate + tier3_kwh * tier3_rate

Then the calculator adds Fixed monthly charge and Other fees or credits. Tax rate is entered as a percent, so 8 means 8 percent, not 0.08.

Mini-example

If Monthly electricity use is 750 kWh, Tier 1 covers the first 500 kWh at $0.15 per kWh, Tier 2 covers the next 500 kWh at $0.20 per kWh, and the final rate is $0.30 per kWh, then Tier 1 electricity use is 500 kWh, Tier 2 electricity use is 250 kWh, and Electricity use after Tier 2 is 0 kWh. Energy charges before fees and tax are 500 * 0.15 + 250 * 0.20 + 0 * 0.30 = $125. With a $12 Fixed monthly charge, $0 Other fees or credits, and 0 percent tax, Estimated total bill is $137 and Average cost for each kWh is about $0.183 per kWh.
