How to use our Square Meters to Square Feet Converter
- Keep "I have square meters" if a listing, plan, label, or quote already gives an area in m2.
- Enter the area in "Square meters (m2)" and select Calculate.
- If you have two side measurements instead, choose "I have length and width", enter both measurements, and choose meters or feet for both.
- Read "Area in square feet" first. "Square-meter area used" shows the area that was converted.
- Sanity-check the result: 1 m2 is about 10.8 ft2. Open "Advanced options" to change displayed decimal places when you need more detail.
Definitions
Square meter (m2): An area equal to a square 1 meter long and 1 meter wide.
Square foot (ft2): An area equal to a square 1 foot long and 1 foot wide. Sq ft, sf, and sqft mean the same unit.
Area conversion factor: The number of square feet in 1 square meter. This calculator uses 10.763910416709722 ft2 per m2, derived from the international foot definition of exactly 0.3048 meter.
Rectangular area: Length multiplied by width, with both measurements in the same linear unit.
Rounding: Showing fewer decimal places without changing the unrounded value used for conversion.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a length in "Square meters (m2)".
Fix: Enter an area value, or choose "I have length and width" and enter both sides.
Mistake: Multiplying an area by 3.28084.
Fix: Check What do you have? and then recalculate. That is a length conversion. Area uses about 10.7639 square feet per square meter.
Mistake: Choosing meters for the dimensions but typing a value such as 4 ft.
Fix: Use meters for both measurements, or change "Length and width unit" to feet.
Mistake: Typing 1,01 when you mean 1.01.
Fix: Check What do you have? and then recalculate. Use a decimal point for decimals. Commas only separate thousands, as in 1,000.
Mistake: Treating a rounded square-foot display as the exact value.
Fix: Increase "Result decimal places" before using the number in a detailed plan, quote, or comparison.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The length-and-width method applies only to a rectangle. Divide an irregular shape into simpler sections, calculate each area, and add them before converting.
- Both dimensions must use the same unit. The calculator accepts meters or feet for the pair, but does not combine mixed units in one calculation.
- The unit conversion is based on the defined international foot, but the result cannot be more precise than the area or measurements entered.
- Changing displayed decimal places changes rounding only. A whole-number display can round a small nonzero area to 0.
- This converter changes units only. It does not include usable floor area, wall thickness, material waste, overlap, or product coverage rules.
Methodology
Calculation
The direct method converts the entered area in square meters. The length-and-width method first calculates a rectangular area. For dimensions entered in feet, the calculator divides the square-foot area by the conversion factor to find square meters.
area in m2 = length x width
area in ft2 = area in m2 x 10.763910416709722
The factor comes from squaring the international-foot conversion: 1 foot is exactly 0.3048 meter.
Worked example
A room measuring 4 m by 3 m has an area of 12 m2. Multiplying 12 by 10.763910416709722 gives 129.16692500051667 ft2, displayed as 129.2 ft2 at one decimal place.
