How to use our Square Meters to Square Feet and Yards Converter
- Type the known number in Area value; commas are okay for large areas.
- Choose The unit you are starting with so the same number is read as m2, ft2, or yd2.
- Open Advanced options if you want to change Decimal places to show or enter Price for each starting square unit ($).

- Sanity-check the result: 100 m2 should be about 1,076 ft2, and 900 ft2 should be exactly 100 yd2.
Definitions
Square meter (m2): A metric area unit equal to a square that is 1 meter on each side.
Square foot (ft2): A US customary area unit equal to a square that is 1 foot on each side.
Square yard (yd2): A US customary area unit equal to 9 square feet, because 1 yard equals 3 feet.
Decimal places to show: The number of digits displayed after the decimal point. It changes rounding, not the true conversion.
Price for each starting square unit ($): The cost for one unit of the area type you selected, such as dollars per m2, dollars per ft2, or dollars per yd2.
Formula used: The main conversion path used after the starting area is converted through square meters.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a room length in Area value instead of an area.
Fix: Use the already-calculated area, such as length times width, before using Area value .
Mistake: Leaving The unit you are starting with on square meters when your listing is in square feet.
Fix: Match The unit you are starting with to the unit printed on the plan, product label, or listing.
Mistake: Treating Area in square yards as the same thing as yards of length.
Fix: Use Area in square yards only for area; one yd2 is a square that is 1 yard by 1 yard.
Mistake: Using Decimal places to show as if it changes the real conversion.
Fix: Decimal places to show only rounds the displayed answer; the calculator keeps full precision until display.

- Displayed values are rounded using Decimal places to show, so a rounded result may not multiply back exactly.
- The price conversion assumes the price is for each starting square unit, not a total job price, delivery fee, tax, or waste allowance.
- Zero area can be converted to zero in all area units, but price per area is not calculated for zero area because it would divide by zero.
- This tool converts area only. It does not estimate flooring boxes, carpet roll width, cuts, installation loss, or building-code usable space.
- For land records tied to old survey-foot systems, official legal values may require the exact unit rules used by that record.
Methodology
How the area conversion works
The calculator first changes the entered area into square meters, then converts that same area into square feet and square yards. NIST publishes guidance for using unit conversion factors, and the calculator uses fixed factors rather than rounded classroom estimates [1].
If starting unit is m2: area_m2 = area_value
If starting unit is ft2: area_m2 = area_value * 0.09290304
If starting unit is yd2: area_m2 = area_value * 0.83612736
area_ft2 = area_m2 / 0.09290304
area_yd2 = area_m2 / 0.83612736
Because 1 square yard equals 9 square feet, the square-yard result is also the square-foot result divided by 9.
How the optional price conversion works
If Price for each starting square unit ($) is filled in, the calculator treats it as a unit price in the same unit chosen under The unit you are starting with. It first finds the total price for the entered area, then divides that total by each converted area.
total_price = area_value * price_per_start_unit
price_per_m2 = total_price / area_m2
price_per_ft2 = total_price / area_ft2
price_per_yd2 = total_price / area_yd2
Mini-example
For 100 m2, the square-foot result is 100 / 0.09290304 = 1,076.391 ft2, and the square-yard result is 100 / 0.83612736 = 119.599 yd2. If the price is $20 per m2, the total price is $2,000, so the price per square foot is $2,000 / 1,076.391 = $1.8581 per ft2 when shown to 4 decimal places.
Rounding and validation
The calculator strips commas and spaces before reading numbers. It blocks blank, non-numeric, infinite, and negative area values. It allows a zero area for area conversion, but skips price-per-area outputs when area is zero because price per area would require division by zero. Decimal display uses the selected Decimal places to show value from 0 through 4, while the internal math keeps full precision until the final display step.
