Decimal pounds: A weight written as pounds with a decimal, such as 7.5 lb. The decimal part is a fraction of a pound, not ounces.

Pounds part: The whole-pound part of a mixed weight, such as the 7 in 7 lb 8 oz.

Ounces part: The ounce part of a mixed weight. It can be 16 or more when entered, because the converter carries full groups of 16 oz into pounds.

Total ounces: The whole weight written only in ounces.

Leftover ounces: The ounces left after full pounds are removed. In the displayed mixed result, this is rounded by the selected ounce step and kept below 16 oz.

Round ounces to: The size of the rounding step used for the displayed leftover ounces, such as nearest 0.1 oz or nearest 1 oz.

Mistake: Treating Decimal pounds (lb) like the decimal digits are ounces, such as reading 7.8 lb as 7 lb 8 oz.
Fix: Enter 7.8 in Decimal pounds (lb) ; the converter multiplies the 0.8 lb part by 16 and shows 12.8 oz.

Mistake: Using the wrong choice in What do you want to convert? and filling in fields for the other direction.
Fix: Choose Decimal pounds to lb + oz for one scale number, or lb + oz to decimal pounds when you already have separate pounds and ounces.

Mistake: Thinking Ounces part (oz) must be less than 16 and changing a valid entry like 20 oz by hand.
Fix: Enter the ounces as written; the converter normalizes 16 oz into 1 extra pound.

Mistake: Picking Round ounces to as 1 oz when you need a scale-style answer with tenths or hundredths of an ounce.
Fix: Use 0.1 oz, 0.01 oz, or 0.001 oz when the copied answer needs more detail.

Mistake: Entering a negative number in Decimal pounds (lb) , Pounds part (lb) , or Ounces part (oz) for a physical weight.
Fix: Use 0 or a positive number only.

• This converter uses the avoirdupois weight relationship of 1 lb = 16 oz. It is not for troy ounces or fluid ounces.
• Inputs must be weights of 0 or more. Blank, nonnumeric, and negative entries are errors.
• The mixed result rounds only the leftover ounce part. Total ounces and Decimal pounds keep the unrounded converted value when possible.
• Very small positive weights can display as 0 lb 0 oz if Round ounces to is coarse. Check Total ounces when that happens.
• Rounding can carry the leftover ounces into the next pound. For example, a value close to 3 lb 16 oz displays as 4 lb 0 oz instead of 3 lb 16 oz.
• Real scale readings can include device rounding, calibration error, or label rounding before you enter the number.

Conversion steps

The converter first puts the weight into total ounces, then splits total ounces into whole pounds and leftover ounces. It uses 16 ounces per pound for every calculation.

total_ounces = decimal_pounds x 16

decimal_pounds = whole_pounds + ounces_part / 16

whole_pounds_raw = floor(total_ounces / 16)

leftover_ounces_raw = total_ounces - whole_pounds_raw x 16

The leftover ounces are then rounded to the selected step.

leftover_ounces_rounded = round(leftover_ounces_raw / rounding_step) x rounding_step

If the rounded leftover ounces reach 16, the converter adds 1 to the whole pounds and displays 0 leftover ounces. This avoids an answer like 3 lb 16.0 oz.

Worked example

For a scale reading of 7.8 lb with rounding to the nearest 0.1 oz, the total ounces are 7.8 x 16 = 124.8 oz. The full pounds are floor(124.8 / 16) = 7 lb. The leftover ounces are 124.8 - 7 x 16 = 12.8 oz, so the mixed result is 7 lb 12.8 oz. This is why 7.8 lb is not 7 lb 8 oz.

Reverse check

For 5 lb 20 oz, the decimal pounds are 5 + 20 / 16 = 6.25 lb. The mixed display normalizes 100 total ounces into 6 lb 4 oz.
