How to use our Ounces to Tons Converter
- Find the weight in ordinary ounces on a package label, scale, shipping record, inventory record, or worksheet.
- Enter it in Weight in ounces (oz). Decimals, correctly grouped commas, and an oz suffix are accepted, such as 32,000 oz.

Definitions
Ordinary ounce (oz): An everyday US unit of weight. This calculator uses the avoirdupois ounce, not a fluid ounce or troy ounce.

Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Treating US short tons, metric tonnes, and long tons as equal.
Fix: Use the first result for US short tons. Turn on the comparison when the source may use another ton type.
Mistake: Entering fluid ounces from a container label.
Fix: Enter ordinary weight oz from a scale or weight record. Fluid ounces measure volume, so their weight depends on the material.
Mistake: Entering troy ounces from a precious-metal listing.
Fix: Convert troy ounces to ordinary avoirdupois ounces first. This calculator uses ordinary weight ounces.
Mistake: Typing a large number with incorrect commas, such as 1,01.
Fix: Use commas only before groups of three digits, such as 1,001, or type 1001 without commas.
Mistake: Reading a very small positive conversion as zero.
Fix: Keep the displayed small decimal or scientific notation. Any positive number of ounces converts to a positive number of tons.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- Enter ordinary avoirdupois ounces only; fluid ounces and troy ounces are different units.
- The first answer uses US short tons. Metric tonnes and long tons are different-sized units.
- Zero is valid and converts to zero. Negative values, ranges, formulas, and incorrectly placed commas are rejected.
- Small positive values may use extra decimal places or scientific notation so they do not appear to be zero.
- The conversion uses the entered weight exactly and does not account for scale error, packaging, moisture, or rounding in the original record.

Conversion method
One US short ton equals 2,000 pounds, and each pound equals 16 ordinary ounces. Therefore, one US short ton equals 32,000 ordinary ounces. [1]

The optional metric comparison uses 0.028349523125 kilograms per ordinary ounce and 1,000 kilograms per metric tonne.

A long ton equals 2,240 pounds, which is 35,840 ordinary ounces.

Worked example
For 32,000 oz, divide 32,000 by 32,000 to get 1 US short ton. The same mass is 0.90718474 metric tonnes and about 0.892857 long tons. The calculator keeps the unrounded conversion value and rounds only the displayed result.
