How to use our Nautical Miles to Miles Converter
- Choose a direction in Convert: either nautical miles to miles or miles to nautical miles.
- Enter your starting value in Distance. You can type whole numbers or decimals, and commas are fine.
- If you want, open Advanced options to choose Decimal places or add Speed (knots, optional) for a travel time estimate.
- Click Calculate to see Converted distance, Result unit, and the Formula used. If speed is entered, you will also get Estimated travel time.
- Sanity-check the result by making sure Result unit matches what you wanted. If you convert nautical miles to miles, the number should get a little bigger; if you convert miles to nautical miles, it should get a little smaller.

Definitions
Nautical mile (nmi): A distance unit used mainly at sea and in aviation. It is different from a land mile.[1]
Mile (mi): In this calculator, this means a US land mile, also called a statute mile.[1]
Knot (kn): A speed of 1 nautical mile per hour, used for the Estimated travel time.
Converted distance: The distance after changing from the starting unit to the other unit.
Formula used: The exact conversion rule the calculator applied for your selected direction.
Decimal places: How many digits appear after the decimal point in the displayed result.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering a number in Distance but forgetting that Convert is set to the other direction.
Fix: Check Convert first so the starting unit matches the number you typed.
Mistake: Reading Converted distance as a land mile result when Result unit says nautical miles, or the other way around.
Fix: Always read Result unit before using the answer in navigation, travel, or homework.
Mistake: Leaving Distance blank or typing text that is not a real number.
Fix: Enter a real number in Distance , such as 10, 10.5, or 1,250.
Mistake: Typing 0 or a negative number in Speed (knots, optional) and expecting an Estimated travel time .
Fix: Leave Speed (knots, optional) blank to hide time, or enter a speed greater than 0.
Mistake: Thinking more digits always means a better answer because Decimal places is set to 6.
Fix: Use Decimal places based on your need: 2 is often enough for quick use, while 4 or 6 is better for checking exact conversion work.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The calculator converts only between nautical miles and statute miles. It does not convert directly to kilometers, meters, or feet.
- Estimated travel time uses a constant speed in knots and assumes no stops, currents, wind, routing changes, or acceleration.
- If you enter miles and also enter Speed (knots, optional), the calculator first converts the distance to nautical miles before finding time.
- Negative values are allowed for math consistency, but a negative distance usually means signed change or direction, not actual traveled length.
- Rounding depends on Decimal places, so the displayed answer may look slightly different from the full exact value.
- Very small or very large numbers are still converted with the same factor, but you should double-check the unit choice so you do not mix land miles with nautical miles.
Methodology
Conversion method
The calculator uses one fixed factor between nautical miles and statute miles. A nautical mile is defined separately from a land mile, so the numbers are not the same.[1][2]
mi = nmi x 1.150779448
nmi = mi / 1.150779448
For the optional time helper, knots mean nautical miles per hour. If your starting distance is in miles, the calculator first changes it to nautical miles, then finds time.
hours = nmi / kn
Worked mini-example
If Convert is set to nautical miles to miles and Distance is 10, the result is 10 x 1.150779448 = 11.50779448 miles. With Decimal places set to 4, Converted distance displays as 11.5078.
If Speed (knots, optional) is 20 and the nautical distance is 60 nmi, then time is 60 / 20 = 3 hours, so Estimated travel time is 3 hours 0 minutes.
Calculation choices
The calculator strips commas and spaces before reading numbers, accepts 0 as a valid Distance, and keeps negative results negative instead of forcing them to 0. Time is shown only when Speed (knots, optional) is entered and is greater than 0.
Assumptions used
The calculator uses 1 nautical mile = 1852 meters and 1 statute mile = 1609.344 meters, which gives the factor 1.150779448 miles per nautical mile. The time helper assumes steady speed and does not include real-world delays.
