How to use our Miles to Km Converter

  1. Enter the distance from a map, route, odometer, treadmill, or race listing in "Distance (miles)."
  2. Use a number such as 2.5 or 1,000. You can also type a matching suffix, such as "5 mi."
  3. Open "Advanced options" and change "Result decimal places" only if you need a different amount of displayed detail.
  4. Select "Calculate" to see the same distance in kilometers.
  5. Sanity-check a positive result: the kilometer number should be a little larger than the miles number because 1 mile is more than 1.6 kilometers.

Definitions

Statute mile: The ordinary land mile used for US road distances and many US distance listings. One statute mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers.

Kilometer (km): A metric unit of length equal to 1,000 meters.

Decimal places: The digits shown to the right of a decimal point. This setting changes the displayed rounding, not the converted distance.

Rounded value: A shorter displayed number close to the unrounded value. For example, 8.04672 rounded to two decimal places is 8.05.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a speed such as 60 mph instead of a distance.
Fix: Enter only a distance in miles. A speed needs a time before it can be used to find distance.

Mistake: Typing "5 km" in "Distance (miles)."
Fix: Enter the original distance in miles, such as 5 or 5 mi. This converter goes from miles to kilometers.

Mistake: Using a comma as a decimal mark or typing 1,00.
Fix: Use a decimal point for decimals, such as 1.5. Use commas only for thousands, such as 1,000.

Mistake: Entering a negative physical distance.
Fix: Enter 0 or a positive number. Zero miles is valid and converts to zero kilometers.

Mistake: Copying a rounded answer into work that needs more detail.
Fix: Increase "Result decimal places" before calculating, then round only as your instructions require.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This converter is for non-negative statute-mile distances, not nautical miles, survey miles, or speeds such as miles per hour.
  • The conversion factor is exact, but the displayed kilometer value is rounded to the selected number of decimal places.
  • If a map, sign, or app already rounded the original miles value, converting it cannot recover missing detail.
  • Very large finite entries are rejected if multiplying them cannot produce a finite number.

Methodology

Calculation

The calculator multiplies the entered statute-mile distance by 1.609344. The international mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers.

kilometers = miles * 1.609344

Worked example

For 5 miles, multiply 5 by 1.609344. The unrounded distance is 8.04672 kilometers. With two decimal places selected, the display shows 8.05 km.

5 * 1.609344 = 8.04672 km

Display rounding

The calculator uses the unrounded product, then rounds only the displayed kilometer value to the selected number of decimal places.
