Calculate leaf area index from matched leaf and ground areas, or measure vertical canopy cover from covered observation points.

How to use our Leaf Area Index and Canopy Cover Calculator
- Choose "Calculate LAI" if you measured leaf and ground areas, or "Calculate canopy cover" if you counted covered observation points.
- For LAI, enter Total leaf area, choose its Leaf area unit, then enter the matching Ground area represented by the leaves and its unit.
- Choose how leaf area was counted. Select one side only unless your measurement adds both sides of every leaf.
- For canopy cover, enter Covered observation points and All observation points from the same vertical point grid or image sample.
- Check that the result matches your method: Leaf area index (LAI) is a unitless layering ratio, while Measured vertical canopy cover is a percent from your point sample.

Definitions
Leaf area index (LAI): One-sided leaf area divided by the matching ground area. The square units cancel, so LAI has no unit. It can be greater than 1 because leaves can overlap in layers. [1]
One-sided leaf area: The area of one face of each leaf. If a measurement includes both faces, divide the total by 2 before calculating LAI.
Represented ground area: The plot, frame, row section, bench, or footprint covered by the exact leaves included in Total leaf area.
Measured vertical canopy cover: The percentage of vertical sample points where foliage is present. It is based on observation counts, not on LAI.
Open observation points: The percentage of sampled points without foliage. It equals 100% minus measured vertical canopy cover.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Total leaf area comes from a few plants, but Ground area represented by the leaves covers a different plot or bench.
Fix: Use a ground area that represents the same leaves in the sample.
Mistake: The Leaf area unit or Ground area unit does not match the unit shown by the measuring tool.
Fix: Choose each reported square unit separately before calculating.
Mistake: Both sides of each leaf were added, but "One side of each leaf" was selected.
Fix: Check What do you want to calculate? and then recalculate. Select "Both sides of each leaf" so the calculator converts the total to one-sided leaf area.
Mistake: Leaf area index (LAI) is read as a percent of ground covered.
Fix: Use Measured vertical canopy cover only when you have Covered observation points and All observation points.
Mistake: Covered observation points is greater than All observation points.
Fix: Recount the sample; covered points cannot exceed the full number of points.
Mistake: Total leaf area is entered as "1,01" for a decimal value.
Fix: Use a decimal point for decimals, such as "1.01"; commas are only for thousands, such as "1,000".
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- LAI is only as representative as the leaves and ground area measured. The calculator cannot verify that they came from the same plot, plants, or sampling frame.
- The LAI path uses the selected one-sided or both-sides leaf convention. A wrong choice can double or halve the reported LAI.
- Measured vertical canopy cover applies only to the sampled area, viewing direction, point spacing, and rule used to mark a point as covered.
- LAI and canopy cover are different measures. This calculator does not convert one into the other or estimate light interception, crop yield, or a crop-specific target.
- Area conversions are exact within the stated unit definitions, but field measurements, image classification, leaf overlap, and sample selection can add real-world uncertainty.
Methodology
LAI calculation
The calculator converts Total leaf area and Ground area represented by the leaves to square meters, then forms an area ratio. If both sides of each leaf were counted, it first uses half of the entered leaf total.
one-sided leaf area (sq m) = total leaf area x selected leaf-area conversion x 0.5 or 1
represented ground area (sq m) = ground area x selected ground-area conversion
LAI = one-sided leaf area (sq m) / represented ground area (sq m)
For example, 1,000 sq in of one-sided leaves is 0.64516 sq m. A matching 10 sq ft ground area is 0.9290304 sq m, so LAI is 0.64516 / 0.9290304 = 0.6944.
Canopy cover calculation
The canopy-cover path uses only the point counts from the selected observation sample. It requires whole counts, at least one total point, and no more covered points than total points.
measured vertical canopy cover (%) = covered observation points / all observation points x 100
open observation points (%) = 100 - measured vertical canopy cover (%)
For example, 65 covered points out of 100 points gives 65% measured vertical canopy cover and 35% open observation points.
