Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- A month is not a fixed time length. The Answer depends on the Month length to use choice.
- The average calendar month uses 30.436875 days, which is useful for general conversions but does not match every real calendar month.
- The 28-day, 30-day, and 31-day choices are fixed conventions. They do not account for February 29 in leap years.
- This converter handles time lengths only. It rejects negative values because a negative value would be a signed offset, not a length.
- If you need the exact number of months between two calendar dates, use a date-based method because start date, end date, and calendar rules matter.
- Rounding affects the displayed Answer only. Internal calculations use the unrounded month length.
Methodology
How the conversion is calculated
The converter first turns the selected month length into hours. One day is counted as 24 hours. The default average calendar month is based on a 365.2425-day Gregorian calendar year divided by 12.
month_days = 365.2425 / 12 = 30.436875
month_hours = month_days * 24
For hours to months, the entered hours are divided by the selected hours per month.
months = hours / month_hours
For months to hours, the entered months are multiplied by the selected hours per month.
hours = months * month_hours
Worked example
If you enter 1,000 in Hours (hours) and choose a 30-day month, the calculator counts one month as 30 * 24 = 720 hours.
months = 1000 / 720 = 1.388888...
Rounded to 6 decimal places, the Answer is 1.388889 months. If you instead choose the average calendar month, the divisor is 730.485 hours, so the Answer is smaller: about 1.368954 months.
