Fertilizer Calculator

Enter your area and package coverage or nutrient recommendation to calculate fertilizer product pounds to spread and whole bags to buy.

Project and bag details

Fertilizer product to spreadThis is fertilizer product weight, not the weight of one nutrient. Check current package directions before spreading it.
Whole bags to buyThe final bag may be partly left over.

How to use our Fertilizer Calculator

  1. Choose whether you are following the package coverage or matching a nutrient recommendation from a soil test, Extension source, or package directions.
  2. Enter the lawn, garden, or bed area, then choose the same area unit used by your measurement.
  3. Enter the bag weight. For the package path, copy the package coverage for your planned use. For the nutrient path, copy the nutrient rate and the N-P-K numbers printed on the bag.
  4. Enter the price per bag only if you want a whole-bag purchase estimate, then select Calculate.
  5. Check that the product weight matches the package directions for your use. Use Whole bags to buy for shopping, since it rounds the fractional bag amount upward.

Definitions

N-P-K grade: The three fertilizer-label percentages, in order: nitrogen (N), phosphate (P2O5), and potash (K2O).

Nitrogen (N): The first number in the N-P-K grade. Recommendations may state pounds of N for a stated area.

Phosphate (P2O5): The second number in the N-P-K grade. It is the phosphate form used on fertilizer labels and in some recommendations.

Potash (K2O): The third number in the N-P-K grade. It is the potash form used on fertilizer labels and in some recommendations.

Fertilizer product: The bagged material spread on the ground. Its weight is different from the weight of a nutrient contained in it.

Package coverage: The area one bag treats for a specific use, usually stated as square feet per bag.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering pounds of fertilizer product as the nutrient rate.
Fix: Check What information do you have? and then recalculate. Enter pounds of N, P2O5, or K2O from the recommendation. The calculator converts that nutrient amount into pounds of product.

Mistake: Choosing acres for an area measured in square feet.
Fix: Check What information do you have? and then recalculate. Choose the unit attached to your measurement. Do not choose an area unit based on how large the number looks.

Mistake: Using package coverage listed for a different use.
Fix: Check What information do you have? and then recalculate. Copy the sq ft per bag value for your planned use. A package can list different coverage for established lawns, new plantings, or gardens.

Mistake: Treating the second and third N-P-K numbers as elemental phosphorus and potassium.
Fix: Check What information do you have? and then recalculate. Copy the bag values as printed. The second value is P2O5 and the third is K2O.

Mistake: Buying the fractional number shown as exact bags needed.
Fix: Buy the Whole bags to buy amount, which rounds up. The remaining portion of the last bag may be left over.

Mistake: Reading the purchase estimate as the cost of only the product spread.
Fix: Check What information do you have? and then recalculate. The estimate is for all whole bags purchased, including product left in the final bag.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator converts the area, package details, and nutrient rate entered. It does not decide whether fertilizer is needed or which product is suitable.
  • Use the current package directions for the exact product and planned use. Coverage can differ for established turf, new plantings, gardens, and other uses.
  • A nutrient recommendation must use the same form selected in the calculator: N, P2O5, or K2O. The calculator does not convert P2O5 to elemental phosphorus or K2O to elemental potassium.
  • Whole bags are rounded up for purchase, so the pounds to spread can be less than the amount purchased.
  • Soil conditions, plant type, season, local restrictions, and water-quality rules can affect what application is appropriate. Follow product-label directions and local requirements.
  • The price estimate uses whole bags and excludes tax, delivery, other materials, and the value of unused product.

Methodology

How the math works

The calculator converts acres to square feet when needed, then uses either package coverage or a selected nutrient recommendation to calculate pounds of fertilizer product. One acre equals 43,560 square feet.

area_sqft = area_value * 43,560 for acres; otherwise area_value

selected_nutrient_lb = nutrient_rate * area_sqft / 1,000 for a per-1,000-sq-ft rate, or nutrient_rate * area_sqft / 43,560 for a per-acre rate

product_weight_lb = bag_weight_lb * area_sqft / package_coverage for the package path

product_weight_lb = selected_nutrient_lb / (selected_bag_percent / 100) for the nutrient path

exact_bags_needed = product_weight_lb / bag_weight_lb

whole_bags_to_buy = round exact_bags_needed up to the next whole bag

For the nutrient path, the calculator multiplies the product weight by each bag-label percentage to show the N, P2O5, and K2O supplied. It keeps fractional pounds and bags during the calculation and rounds only the number of bags to buy.

Worked example

For a 5,000 sq ft lawn, a 40 lb bag with coverage of 10,000 sq ft per bag gives 40 * 5,000 / 10,000 = 20 lb of product to spread. The application uses 20 / 40 = 0.5 bag, so the purchase amount is 1 whole bag.
