How to use our Emergency Fund Calculator
- Enter Monthly essential expenses ($) for costs you must still pay during an emergency, such as rent, food, utilities, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments.
- Enter Months you want covered (months), Current emergency savings ($), and Monthly saving for this fund ($).
- Open Advanced options only if you want to add Extra buffer added to target (%) or Annual savings yield (%).
- Click Calculate and read Emergency fund target first, then Gap or extra saved, Time to reach target, and Monthly saving needed for a 12-month finish.
- Sanity-check the result by asking if Current months covered matches your real life. If one month of essentials is wrong, every target and timeline result will be off.

Definitions
Emergency fund: Cash set aside for surprise costs or lost income, instead of money invested for long-term goals.
Monthly essential expenses ($): The bills and basic costs you would still need to pay during an emergency.
Months you want covered (months): The number of months your emergency fund should be able to cover your essential costs.
Extra buffer added to target (%): A percent added on top of the basic target to allow for higher prices or missed expenses.
Annual savings yield (%): The yearly percent your savings earns before taxes. The calculator turns it into a monthly rate for planning.
Gap or extra saved: Emergency fund target minus Current emergency savings ($). Positive means you are short. Negative means you are above the target.
Current months covered: How many months your current emergency savings could cover your entered monthly essentials.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Putting total monthly spending into Monthly essential expenses ($), including costs you would cut right away.
Fix: Use only must-pay costs in Monthly essential expenses ($) so Emergency fund target is not too high.
Mistake: Entering 0 in Months you want covered (months).
Fix: Enter a goal greater than 0 in Months you want covered (months), such as 3 or 6.
Mistake: Counting retirement accounts or invested money in Current emergency savings ($).
Fix: Use cash that is set aside for emergencies and easy to reach in Current emergency savings ($).
Mistake: Leaving Monthly saving for this fund ($) at 0 and expecting Time to reach target to show a future finish date.
Fix: Enter a monthly amount in Monthly saving for this fund ($), or use the Planning note to see that the target will not be reached without more saving.
Mistake: Typing 10 as Annual savings yield (%) when the account earns 1.0%.
Fix: Enter the yearly percent shown for the savings account in Annual savings yield (%), before taxes.
Mistake: Reading a negative Gap or extra saved as an error.
Fix: A negative Gap or extra saved means Current emergency savings ($) is above Emergency fund target by that amount.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The calculator treats the emergency fund as cash savings, not invested money that can rise or fall in value.
- Monthly essential expenses ($) must be greater than $0. If that number is too low, Emergency fund target and Current months covered will look better than they really are.
- The result assumes your essential monthly costs stay the same during the planning period, except for any Extra buffer added to target (%).
- Annual savings yield (%) is applied as a steady monthly rate before taxes and fees. Real account rates can change.
- Time to reach target uses whole months and rounds up, because a partial month still means waiting for the next planned deposit.
- If Monthly saving for this fund ($) is 0 and you are short of the target, the calculator can show the gap but not a finish date.
- The 12-month saving amount is a planning pace, not a budget rule. It may be unrealistic if it is larger than your available monthly cash.
Methodology
Calculation steps
The calculator starts with the common emergency fund sizing method: monthly essentials times the number of months you want covered.
base_target_before_buffer = monthly_essentials * coverage_months
If you enter a buffer percent, the calculator adds that extra amount to the target.
buffer_added = base_target_before_buffer * (target_buffer_percent / 100)
emergency_fund_target = base_target_before_buffer + buffer_added
The savings gap keeps its sign. A positive value means you still need that much. A negative value means you already have extra above the target.
gap_or_extra = emergency_fund_target - current_savings
Current coverage compares your current emergency savings with one month of essential costs.
current_months_covered = current_savings / monthly_essentials
Time and 12-month pace
When Annual savings yield (%) is 0 and you are short, the calculator divides the gap by Monthly saving for this fund ($) and rounds up to whole months. If you are not short, the time is 0 months. If monthly saving is 0 while you are short, the calculator shows a not-feasible note instead of infinity.
months_to_goal = ceil(gap_or_extra / monthly_saving)
When Annual savings yield (%) is greater than 0, the calculator converts the yearly yield to a monthly decimal rate and assumes deposits are made at the end of each month.
monthly_rate = (annual_yield_percent / 100) / 12
months_to_goal = ceil(ln((emergency_fund_target * monthly_rate + monthly_saving) / (current_savings * monthly_rate + monthly_saving)) / ln(1 + monthly_rate))
The 12-month pace shows the monthly saving needed to hit the target in 12 months. With no yield, it is the remaining gap divided by 12.
monthly_saving_needed_12 = gap_or_extra / 12
With yield, the calculator accounts for growth on current savings and monthly deposits, then floors the required saving at 0 because a required monthly saving cannot be negative.
monthly_saving_needed_12 = max(0, (emergency_fund_target - current_savings * (1 + monthly_rate)^12) * monthly_rate / ((1 + monthly_rate)^12 - 1))
Mini-example
Suppose Monthly essential expenses ($) is $3,000, Months you want covered (months) is 6, Current emergency savings ($) is $1,000, Monthly saving for this fund ($) is $250, Extra buffer added to target (%) is 0, and Annual savings yield (%) is 0. The target before buffer is $18,000, the buffer is $0, and the Emergency fund target is $18,000. Gap or extra saved is $17,000, Current months covered is 0.33 months, Time to reach target is 68 months, and Monthly saving needed for a 12-month finish is $1,416.67 per month.
