Methodology
Conversion rule
The converter uses a standard day length of 24 hours. Since each hour has 60 minutes and each minute has 60 seconds, one standard day has 86,400 seconds [1].
86,400 = 24 * 60 * 60
For days to seconds, it multiplies the entered day count by 86,400.
seconds = days * 86,400
For seconds to days, it divides the entered second count by 86,400.
days = seconds / 86,400
Time breakdown
The written-out form first finds whole days, then uses the leftover seconds to find hours, minutes, and seconds.
whole_days = floor(total_seconds / 86,400)
leftover = total_seconds - whole_days * 86,400
hours = floor(leftover / 3,600)
minutes = floor((leftover - hours * 3,600) / 60)
For negative inputs, the sign is kept on the converted value. The breakdown describes the size of the time span and notes that it is negative.
Mini-example
If Days (days) is 1.5, the calculator does this:
