How to use our Cost Per Mile Calculator

  1. Enter Miles driven per year (miles), Fuel economy (miles per gallon), and Gas price ($ per gallon).
  2. Add Yearly non-fuel costs ($) and Yearly value loss ($) so the result includes more than gas.
  3. Open Advanced options only if you want to add Extra monthly vehicle costs ($), Trip or job distance (miles), or Pay or reimbursement ($ per mile).
  4. Click Calculate and read Your true cost per mile first, then compare the fuel and non-fuel parts.
  5. Sanity-check the answer: if the cost per mile looks too high or low, recheck annual miles, MPG, and whether value loss was entered as a yearly amount.

Definitions

Miles driven per year (miles): The total miles you expect to drive in one year.

Fuel economy (miles per gallon): How many miles your vehicle travels on one gallon of gas, often called MPG [1].

Yearly non-fuel costs ($): Vehicle costs other than gas, such as insurance, registration, repairs, oil changes, and tires.

Yearly value loss ($): The estimated drop in your vehicle's value over one year.

Your true cost per mile: The average cost of one mile after fuel, yearly non-fuel costs, value loss, and extra monthly costs are spread over your yearly miles.

Compared with the 2026 IRS business rate: Your cost per mile minus $0.725 per mile. A positive number means your estimated cost is higher than that comparison rate.

Pay left after cost per mile: Pay or reimbursement per mile minus your estimated cost per mile. Negative means the pay does not cover the estimated cost.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering monthly miles in Miles driven per year (miles) .
Fix: Multiply monthly miles by 12, then enter the yearly total.

Mistake: Using the window-sticker number for Fuel economy (miles per gallon) when your real driving gets lower MPG.
Fix: Use your tracked average MPG, especially for city driving or delivery work.

Mistake: Putting the full tank fill-up total in Gas price ($ per gallon) .
Fix: Enter the price for one gallon, such as 3.50.

Mistake: Leaving insurance, repairs, tires, or registration out of Yearly non-fuel costs ($) .
Fix: Add the yearly total of those costs before calculating.

Mistake: Entering the car purchase price as Yearly value loss ($) .
Fix: Estimate how much value the car loses in one year, not its full price.

Mistake: Reading Pay left after cost per mile as total profit for a job.
Fix: Use Pay left after this trip or job when Trip or job distance (miles) is entered.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The result is an average over the yearly miles entered. A single trip can cost more or less because traffic, speed, weather, and road type affect fuel use.
  • Yearly non-fuel costs and value loss are estimates. Insurance changes, repairs, tire wear, resale value, and financing choices can change the real cost.
  • The calculator treats gas price, MPG, and yearly costs as constant for the year.
  • The 2026 IRS business rate comparison is only a simple per-mile comparison. It is not tax advice and may not match your tax situation.
  • If annual miles are very low, fixed yearly costs are spread over fewer miles, so the cost per mile can become very high.
  • Trip and pay results use the same average cost per mile. They do not separate extra tolls, parking, waiting time, unpaid miles, or job-specific expenses unless you include them in the cost inputs.

Methodology

Core yearly cost

The calculator first estimates yearly fuel cost from miles, MPG, and gas price. It then adds yearly non-fuel costs, yearly value loss, and optional extra monthly costs converted to a yearly amount.

annual_fuel_cost = (annual_miles / fuel_economy_mpg) * fuel_price

annual_extra_costs = extra_monthly_costs * 12

annual_total_cost = annual_fuel_cost + yearly_nonfuel_costs + yearly_value_loss + annual_extra_costs

Per-mile results

The main result divides the total yearly cost by yearly miles. Fuel and non-fuel parts are also shown separately so you can see what changes when gas price, MPG, or yearly costs change.

cost_per_mile = annual_total_cost / annual_miles

fuel_cost_per_mile = fuel_price / fuel_economy_mpg

nonfuel_cost_per_mile = (yearly_nonfuel_costs + yearly_value_loss + annual_extra_costs) / annual_miles

vs_irs_business_rate = cost_per_mile - 0.725

Trip and paid-driving check

If a trip distance is entered, the calculator multiplies your cost per mile by that distance. If pay per mile is entered, it subtracts your cost per mile from the pay rate and can also estimate the total gain or loss for the trip.

trip_cost = cost_per_mile * trip_miles

net_per_mile = pay_per_mile - cost_per_mile

job_net_total = net_per_mile * trip_miles

Mini example

With 12,000 miles per year, 30 MPG, gas at $3.50 per gallon, $2,500 in yearly non-fuel costs, and $3,000 in yearly value loss, annual fuel cost is $1,400. Total yearly driving cost is $6,900, so the true cost per mile is $6,900 / 12,000 = $0.575 per mile. Fuel is about $0.117 per mile, and non-fuel cost is about $0.458 per mile.

Validation choices

Miles driven per year and fuel economy must be greater than 0 because the formulas divide by those numbers. Gas price and cost fields must be 0 or more. Blank optional trip, pay, and extra monthly fields are treated as 0, but non-numeric entries show an error instead of being ignored.
