Estimate a planning cost range for a home electrical panel upgrade using panel size, service route, meter work, and circuit scope.
Table of contents
How to use our Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost Calculator
- Choose Current panel size and New panel size from the amp ratings on the main breaker, panel label, or electrician quote.
- Set Service entrance setup and Meter or outside service box work to match how power reaches your home and what outside equipment must change.
- Choose Circuits to move or replace by counting roughly how many circuits or breaker spaces will be moved into the new panel.
- Open Advanced options if you want to change Panel type, Permit and inspection cost, Local labor cost level, or Wall or finish repair allowance.
- Click Calculate, then sanity-check the output: underground trenching, meter relocation, many circuits, or a smart panel should push the Estimated project cost midpoint higher.

Definitions
amps: Short for amperes, a measure of how much electric current a panel or service can carry.
Service entrance setup: The route where power reaches the meter, such as overhead wires or an underground feed.
Meter or outside service box work: Work on the outdoor equipment that holds or connects to the electric meter.
Circuits to move or replace: The number of branch circuits or breaker spaces that must be moved, reconnected, or replaced in the new panel.
Panel type: The kind of panel planned for the job, such as a main breaker panel, subpanel, or smart panel.
Local labor cost level: A simple multiplier for areas where licensed electrical labor is lower, typical, or higher cost.
Planning range: The low and high estimate around the midpoint, used for early budgeting before a site visit.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Using the utility service size instead of the breaker label for Current panel size.
Fix: Use the amp number printed on the main breaker or ask an electrician before choosing Current panel size.
Mistake: Choosing Overhead wires, same route for Service entrance setup when the job needs a new riser, weatherhead, or underground work.
Fix: Change Service entrance setup to the closest route choice so the service allowance is not too low.
Mistake: Leaving Meter or outside service box work at No meter work expected when the meter base will be replaced or moved.
Fix: Set Meter or outside service box work to Replace in same spot or Relocate meter or add combo panel.
Mistake: Under-counting Circuits to move or replace by counting only large 240-volt breakers.
Fix: Count all circuits that must be moved, including lighting, outlets, kitchen circuits, HVAC, dryer, and range circuits.
Mistake: Typing a range or note into Permit and inspection cost or Wall or finish repair allowance.
Fix: Enter one dollar amount of 0 or more for Permit and inspection cost and Wall or finish repair allowance.
Mistake: Treating Estimated project cost midpoint as a firm bid.
Fix: Use Estimated project cost midpoint to plan a budget, then compare quotes that list service work, meter work, circuits, and permits.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The calculator is for early budgeting. It is not a load calculation, code approval, permit approval, or electrician quote.
- The cost tables are built-in planning allowances. They are not a live local price database and may not match your city, utility, or contractor market.
- Permit and inspection rules, utility disconnect or reconnect fees, and required service upgrades can change the final cost.
- The estimate does not include hidden damage, unsafe wiring, asbestos or lead paint handling, panel clearance corrections, grounding repairs, generator interlock work, or full rewiring unless you include an allowance for it.
- New panel size equal to or smaller than Current panel size can still calculate, but the project may be a replacement or repair instead of a capacity upgrade.
- Tax credits, rebates, utility incentives, financing costs, and emergency service premiums are not included.
Methodology
Cost model
The calculator builds a midpoint estimate from four parts: panel and breaker work, service entrance and meter work, circuit and finish work, and permit and inspection cost. The low end is 85 percent of the midpoint. The high end is 120 percent of the midpoint.
Panel size allowances are 100A = $1,100, 150A = $1,500, 200A = $2,100, 225A = $2,500, and 320A = $3,700. Panel type adjustments are main panel = $0, subpanel = -$400, and smart panel = $2,500. The upgrade-size adder is $3 for each added amp when New panel size is larger than Current panel size.
panel_breaker_work_mid = (base_panel_mid[new_panel_amps] + project_type_add[project_type] + max(0, new_panel_amps - current_panel_amps) * 3) * labor_area_mult[labor_area]
Service entrance allowances are overhead same route = $0, overhead new riser or weatherhead = $900, underground with no trenching = $1,200, and underground with trenching = $3,500. Meter work allowances are none = $0, replace in same spot = $700, and relocate meter or add combo panel = $1,800.
service_utility_work_mid = (service_entrance_mid[service_entrance_setup] + meter_work_mid[meter_work]) * labor_area_mult[labor_area]
Circuit bucket allowances are fewer than 20 circuits = $0, 20 to 29 circuits = $300, 30 to 39 circuits = $700, and 40 or more circuits = $1,200. The Wall or finish repair allowance is added to that bucket before the labor multiplier.
circuit_finish_work_mid = (circuit_bucket_mid[circuit_count_bucket] + wall_repair_allowance) * labor_area_mult[labor_area]
Local labor cost level uses lower-cost area = 0.90, typical-cost area = 1.00, and higher-cost area = 1.15. Permit and inspection cost is added after the labor multiplier because it is entered as a direct dollar amount.
estimated_project_cost_mid = panel_breaker_work_mid + service_utility_work_mid + circuit_finish_work_mid + permit_inspection_cost
estimated_project_cost_low = estimated_project_cost_mid * 0.85
estimated_project_cost_high = estimated_project_cost_mid * 1.20
Worked example
For the default case, Current panel size is 100 amps, New panel size is 200 amps, Service entrance setup is overhead same route, Meter or outside service box work is replace in same spot, Circuits to move or replace is 20 to 29 circuits, Permit and inspection cost is $250, and Local labor cost level is typical.
panel_breaker_work_mid = (2100 + 0 + max(0, 200 - 100) * 3) * 1.00 = 2400
service_utility_work_mid = (0 + 700) * 1.00 = 700
circuit_finish_work_mid = (300 + 0) * 1.00 = 300
estimated_project_cost_mid = 2400 + 700 + 300 + 250 = 3650
estimated_project_cost_low = 3650 * 0.85 = 3102.50
estimated_project_cost_high = 3650 * 1.20 = 4380
Validation and display
Dollar fields must be one nonnegative number. Commas, spaces, and a dollar sign are stripped before calculation. Ranges, formulas, negative values, and missing select choices are blocked with an error. Results are rounded to normal dollar formatting for readability.
