How to use our Debt Management Plan Calculator
- Enter your Unsecured debt balance, Current average APR, and Current monthly payment for the debts you want in the plan.
- Enter the Estimated DMP APR and Target payoff time you want to test.
- Open Advanced options if you want to add a One-time setup fee, Monthly program fee, Monthly take-home pay, or Essential monthly spending.
- Select Calculate, then read the Monthly DMP payment after fees first and the Monthly budget room after DMP payment second.
- Sanity-check the result: if the DMP payment is far higher than what you can pay now, or the budget room is negative, adjust the payoff time or review the plan with a qualified credit counselor.

Definitions
Debt management plan (DMP): A repayment plan usually arranged through credit counseling, where you make one planned payment and creditors may agree to adjusted terms.
Unsecured debt balance: The total debt being tested that is not backed by property, such as credit card debt.
APR: Annual percentage rate. The calculator changes APR into a monthly interest rate before estimating payments and interest.
Current monthly payment: The amount you pay each month on the included debts under your current path.
Target payoff time: The number of months used to size the estimated DMP payment.
Monthly budget room after DMP payment: Take-home pay minus essential spending minus the estimated monthly DMP payment after fees.
Estimated interest and fee savings: Current-plan interest minus estimated DMP interest and fees. A negative value means the DMP estimate costs more under your entries.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Putting a mortgage, auto loan, or student loan into Unsecured debt balance .
Fix: Use Unsecured debt balance for debts such as credit cards and other unsecured accounts you want to include.
Mistake: Entering one card's rate in Current average APR when most of the balance has a different rate.
Fix: Use a balance-weighted average APR if you can, or enter your best total-debt estimate in Current average APR .
Mistake: Using new monthly charges as part of Current monthly payment .
Fix: Enter only the amount you currently pay toward the listed debt each month, not new purchases.
Mistake: Leaving Target payoff time at 60 months without checking the payment it creates.
Fix: Change Target payoff time and recalculate until the Monthly DMP payment after fees fits your planning goal.
Mistake: Forgetting Monthly program fee or One-time setup fee when comparing savings.
Fix: Add known fees so Estimated interest and fee savings reflects more than interest alone.
Mistake: Entering only Monthly take-home pay or only Essential monthly spending .
Fix: Enter both budget fields, or clear both, so Monthly budget room after DMP payment is calculated correctly.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The result is a planning estimate, not approval, a quote, a loan offer, debt settlement, or a promise that creditors will accept the terms.
- The calculator uses one total balance and average APR. It does not model each creditor's exact balance, rate, hardship terms, late fees, or account status.
- The current-payment comparison assumes the APR and monthly payment stay the same and that you make no new charges.
- The DMP estimate assumes the calculated debt payment is made every month for the full target payoff time.
- Setup fees and monthly program fees are included only if you enter them. Other costs or waived fees are not guessed.
- The budget check is simple. It does not replace a full household budget, emergency savings plan, or credit counseling review.
- If the current monthly payment does not cover at least the first month's interest, the current payoff is treated as not feasible because the balance would not shrink.
Methodology
How the DMP payment is calculated
The calculator first changes each APR into a monthly rate.
monthly_rate = apr_percent / 100 / 12
For the estimated DMP, it uses the entered balance, the estimated DMP APR, and the target payoff time. If the monthly rate is 0, the debt payment is the balance divided by the number of months.
dmp_debt_payment = total_unsecured_debt / target_payoff_months
If the monthly rate is greater than 0, it uses the standard fixed-payment loan formula.
dmp_debt_payment = total_unsecured_debt * dmp_monthly_rate / (1 - (1 + dmp_monthly_rate)^(-target_payoff_months))
The monthly program fee is added to the monthly debt payment. The one-time setup fee is not added to the monthly payment because it is paid once.
monthly_dmp_payment_after_fees = dmp_debt_payment + monthly_program_fee
Interest, fees, and savings
DMP interest is the total of the debt payments minus the starting debt balance.
dmp_total_interest = dmp_debt_payment * target_payoff_months - total_unsecured_debt
DMP fees include the one-time setup fee plus the monthly program fee for each target month.
dmp_total_fees = setup_fee + monthly_program_fee * target_payoff_months
The current payoff path is simulated one month at a time. Each month adds interest, applies the current monthly payment, and stops when the balance reaches 0 or near 0.
interest = balance * current_monthly_rate
payment = min(current_monthly_payment, balance + interest)
new_balance = balance + interest - payment
Estimated savings compare current-plan interest with DMP interest and DMP fees. The value is signed, so a negative number means the DMP estimate costs more under the entered assumptions.
estimated_interest_and_fee_savings = current_total_interest - dmp_total_interest - dmp_total_fees
Budget check
If both budget fields are entered, the calculator subtracts essential spending and the estimated DMP payment from monthly take-home pay.
monthly_budget_room_after_dmp = monthly_take_home_pay - essential_monthly_spending - monthly_dmp_payment_after_fees
A positive value means money is left after the estimated payment. A negative value means the entered budget is short by that amount.
Mini-example
For a $12,000 balance, 0% estimated DMP APR, 60 target months, a $50 setup fee, and a $25 monthly program fee, the DMP debt payment is $200 per month. After the monthly fee, the monthly DMP payment after fees is $225. DMP fees are $50 + $25 * 60 = $1,550. If take-home pay is $3,500 and essential spending is $3,000, monthly budget room after the DMP payment is $275.
Special cases
If the current monthly payment is less than or equal to the first month's interest and the current APR is above 0, the calculator treats the current payoff as not feasible. In that case, the DMP estimate can still be shown, but current payoff months and savings are not reliable.
