How to use our Crawl Space Insulation Calculator
- Choose the Crawl space type that matches the job: vented floor insulation or sealed wall insulation.
- Enter Crawl space length (feet), Crawl space width (feet), and Installed cost ($ per sq ft); add Foundation wall height (feet) when using the wall option.
- Open Advanced options if you want to change Extra material for cuts and overlap (percent), include Rim joist height to include (inches), or add Ground cover add-on ($ per crawl floor sq ft).
- Click Calculate, then use Estimated total cost for budgeting and Insulation amount to buy when comparing rolls, boards, bags, or quotes.
- Sanity-check the Measured insulation area: a vented crawl space should be close to length times width, while a sealed crawl space should be close to perimeter times wall height.

Definitions
Crawl space type: The setup that decides which surface is counted. A vented crawl space uses the floor above the crawl space. A sealed or unvented crawl space uses the foundation walls.
R-value: A measure of how well insulation slows heat flow. A higher R-value means better insulating ability for the same assembly [1].
Measured insulation area: The square feet counted before extra material is added.
Insulation amount to buy: The measured insulation area plus Extra material for cuts and overlap.
Rim joist: The band around the edge of the floor frame above the foundation wall. Adding its height counts extra insulation area around the perimeter.
Ground cover add-on: An optional cost for vapor barrier or ground cover over the crawl space floor. It is based on floor area, not wall area.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Leaving Crawl space type on the wrong choice.
Fix: Pick Vented: insulate floor above for floor insulation, or Sealed or unvented: insulate walls for foundation wall insulation.
Mistake: Entering inches in Crawl space length or Crawl space width.
Fix: Convert those dimensions to feet before calculating so Measured insulation area is not 12 times too large.
Mistake: Using the full wall height in Foundation wall height when only part of the wall will be insulated.
Fix: Enter the actual insulated height in feet for the wall option.
Mistake: Putting a total project price in Installed cost.
Fix: Enter the price per square foot in Installed cost ($ per sq ft), such as 2.50, not the whole quote total.
Mistake: Setting Extra material for cuts and overlap to 0 when buying rolls or boards with many cuts.
Fix: Use a positive percent if you need extra material, then compare Insulation amount to buy with package coverage.
Mistake: Adding Ground cover add-on when the contractor quote already includes it.
Fix: Set Ground cover add-on ($ per crawl floor sq ft) to 0 unless you want that cost added separately.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- This is a planning estimate, not a contractor quote. Access, debris, pests, water damage, air sealing, permits, and local labor rates can change the real price.
- The calculator assumes the crawl space footprint is a simple rectangle. For L-shaped or irregular crawl spaces, split the space into rectangles and add the estimates.
- For the vented option, the main insulation area is the floor footprint. For the sealed or unvented option, the main insulation area is foundation wall area.
- Ground cover cost is always based on crawl floor area, even when the insulation placement is on the walls.
- Waste percent is a simple markup on measured insulation area. It does not model package sizes, stud spacing, joist spacing, damaged boards, or returns.
- The calculator does not choose an R-value. Recommended R-values vary by climate zone, home details, and local code.
Methodology
How the area is chosen
The calculator first computes the crawl floor area from the footprint. For a vented crawl space, that floor area is the main insulation area because guidance places insulation in the floor above the crawl space. For a sealed or unvented crawl space, the calculator uses foundation wall area because the insulation is commonly placed on the inside crawl space wall instead of under the floor above [1].
floor_area_sqft = length_ft * width_ft
wall_area_sqft = 2 * (length_ft + width_ft) * wall_height_ft
rim_joist_area_sqft = 2 * (length_ft + width_ft) * (rim_joist_height_in / 12)
How material and cost are calculated
The base area is floor area for the vented option and wall area for the sealed or unvented option. Rim joist area is added when Rim joist height to include is greater than 0. The extra material percent is then applied to estimate how many square feet to buy.
area_to_insulate_sqft = base_area_sqft + rim_joist_area_sqft
material_area_sqft = area_to_insulate_sqft * (1 + waste_percent / 100)
insulation_cost = material_area_sqft * cost_per_sqft
ground_cover_cost = floor_area_sqft * ground_cover_cost_per_sqft
total_cost = insulation_cost + ground_cover_cost
Mini-example
For a sealed crawl space that is 30 feet long, 24 feet wide, and 3 feet high, the wall area is 2 * (30 + 24) * 3 = 324 sq ft. If the rim joist height is 9 inches, rim joist area is 2 * (30 + 24) * (9 / 12) = 81 sq ft. The measured insulation area is 405 sq ft. With 10 percent extra material, the amount to buy is 445.5 sq ft. At $4 per sq ft, insulation costs $1,782. If ground cover is $0.75 per floor sq ft, the add-on is 30 * 24 * 0.75 = $540, so the estimated total cost is $2,322.
