How to use our AC Tune Up Cost Calculator
- Choose What are you pricing?: one tune-up visit or a yearly maintenance plan.
- Select AC type, enter AC units or mini-split heads, then choose Service level and Local price level.
- If you choose a plan, check Plan visits per year and Plan discount against the contract before calculating.
- Open Advanced options only if your quote includes Extra add-ons total, Extra service fees total, or Sales tax or local fee.
- Sanity-check the Estimated cost and range against the written quote, and make sure repairs, refrigerant, and parts are listed separately if they are included.

Definitions
AC tune-up: A maintenance visit for an air conditioner. It may include checks and cleaning tasks, but it is not the same as a repair quote.
AC type: The kind of cooling system being priced: central AC, heat pump, or ductless mini-split.
AC units or mini-split heads: The count used for pricing. Central AC and heat pumps usually count outdoor systems. Mini-splits may be priced by indoor head.
Service level: The amount of maintenance work assumed. Basic is a lighter check, standard is a normal tune-up, and deep clean adds more cleaning time.
Local price level: A simple adjustment for local labor, travel, scheduling, and cost-of-living differences.
Plan visits per year: The number of scheduled maintenance visits included in a yearly maintenance plan.
Plan discount: The percent reduction used to compare a yearly plan with buying the same visits one at a time.
Middle cost per visit before extras: The estimated per-unit visit price before add-ons, service fees, tax, and plan discount.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Mistake: Entering the total number of vents instead of the number for AC units or mini-split heads .
Fix: Use outdoor systems for central AC or heat pumps, and indoor heads only when a mini-split quote is priced per head.
Mistake: Choosing Yearly maintenance plan under What are you pricing? when the quote is for one visit.
Fix: Choose one tune-up visit unless the price includes scheduled visits for the year.
Mistake: Leaving Plan visits per year at 2 when the plan includes only one visit.
Fix: Match the plan contract before using Estimated plan savings .
Mistake: Putting repair parts or refrigerant into Extra add-ons total without checking the invoice.
Fix: Use What this estimate leaves out as a reminder to keep repairs, refrigerant, leak testing, and major parts separate.
Mistake: Treating "Local price level" as measured local pricing. Fix: It changes an illustrative allowance. Compare itemized quotes with matching scope rather than treating the low/high allowances as a likely market range.
Mistake: Typing a percent sign or negative number in Sales tax or local fee , Extra add-ons total , or Extra service fees total .
Fix: Enter numbers only, use 0 for none, and keep added dollar amounts positive.
Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions
- The built-in amounts are illustrative budgeting allowances, not verified current local prices or a statistical likely range. Use itemized local quotes for purchasing decisions; the plan, visit-count, fee, and tax calculations remain arithmetic comparisons.
- The base cost table is built for typical US residential service and may not fit commercial systems, rooftop access, warranty visits, or emergency service.
- Repairs, refrigerant recharge, leak testing, major parts, and code work are not included unless you add them as extra costs, and even then they are only added as a dollar amount.
- The local price level uses simple multipliers: 0.90, 1.00, and 1.20. It is not an official city-by-city labor index.
- Mini-split estimates assume the contractor prices service by indoor head. Some companies price by outdoor condenser, by zone bundle, or by time on site.
- Yearly maintenance plan savings compare scheduled tune-up labor only. Add-ons, service fees, and tax are not counted as savings because they may apply with or without a plan.
- Sales tax or local fee is optional because service labor tax rules and local fees vary by place and by invoice type.
Methodology
Base price table
The calculator uses illustrative low, middle, and high allowances for "AC type" and "Service level". The central AC standard tune-up row is $70, $120, and $200; the other rows and local multipliers are scenario assumptions, not a separately verified market dataset.
base_low, base_mid, base_high = cost_table[AC type][Service level]
Local adjustment
The selected Local price level changes each base visit price. Lower-cost area uses 0.90, average area uses 1.00, and high-cost area uses 1.20.
visit_price = base_price * local_multiplier
One tune-up visit
For one-time pricing, the calculator multiplies the adjusted visit price by AC units or mini-split heads, then adds Extra add-ons total and Extra service fees total.
one_time_total_before_tax = unit_count * visit_price + extra_addons_total + extra_service_fees
Yearly maintenance plan
For a yearly plan, the calculator uses Plan visits per year and Plan discount. Plan inputs affect results only when What are you pricing? is set to yearly maintenance plan.
plan_total_before_tax = unit_count * visit_price * plan_visits_per_year * (1 - plan_discount_percent / 100) + extra_addons_total + extra_service_fees
Tax or local fee
If Sales tax or local fee is blank, the tax or fee amount is $0. If it is entered, the calculator applies that percent to the one-time or yearly subtotal.
total_with_tax = subtotal * (1 + tax_or_fee_percent / 100)
tax_or_fee_amount = total_with_tax - subtotal
Plan savings check
Estimated plan savings compares scheduled tune-up labor under the plan with buying the same number of visits one at a time. It uses the middle visit price and does not include add-ons, service fees, or tax.
plan_savings_mid = unit_count * mid_visit_price * plan_visits_per_year - unit_count * mid_visit_price * plan_visits_per_year * (1 - plan_discount_percent / 100)
Mini-example
For two central AC systems, standard tune-up, high-cost area, two yearly visits, 10 percent plan discount, $40 of add-ons, $25 of service fees, and 8 percent tax:
the middle visit price is $120 * 1.20 = $144. The plan subtotal is 2 * $144 * 2 * (1 - 10 / 100) + $40 + $25 = $583.40. The tax or local fee is $583.40 * 8 / 100 = $46.67, so the estimated total is $630.07, shown rounded to the nearest dollar in the main result.
Maintenance scope note
Routine air conditioner maintenance can include filters, coils, fins, refrigerant lines, and professional checks [2]. The calculator treats these as maintenance context only; it does not price a detailed repair diagnosis or regulated refrigerant work.
