Cups to Pints Converter

Enter cups to find the equivalent US pints, and choose a different cup standard only when your recipe names one.

How to use our Cups to Pints Converter

  1. Enter the cup amount from your recipe, measuring cup, package, or worksheet. Decimals such as 1.5 are allowed.
  2. Keep Cup standard set to US customary for a typical US recipe. Change it only if the source specifically says UK recipe cup or 250 mL recipe cup.
  3. Click Calculate to see the equivalent number of US pints first, followed by US fluid ounces, quarts, and gallons.
  4. Sanity-check a US customary conversion: 2 cups equals 1 US pint, and 4 cups equals 1 US quart.

Definitions

US customary cup: A US liquid-volume measure. Two US cups equal one US liquid pint. [1]

US liquid pint: A US volume measure equal to 2 cups or 16 US fluid ounces. [1]

US fluid ounce: A unit of volume, not weight. A US liquid pint contains 16 US fluid ounces. [1]

UK recipe cup: In this calculator, a cup defined as 10 Imperial fluid ounces, which is 284.130625 mL.

250 mL recipe cup: A cup explicitly defined as 250 milliliters. Recipes described as metric do not always use this exact cup size.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Leaving Cups blank or typing words instead of one number.
Fix: Enter one nonnegative number, such as 2, 1.5, or 1.5 cups.

Mistake: Entering a negative cup amount.
Fix: Check Cups and then recalculate. Enter 0 cups or more. Zero is valid and converts to zero in every displayed unit.

Mistake: Typing 1,01 when you mean one point zero one cups.
Fix: Check Cups and then recalculate. Type 1.01. Commas are only thousands separators, such as 1,000.

Mistake: Typing oz after the cup amount.
Fix: Check Cups and then recalculate. Use cup, cups, or c after the number, or type the number alone. Fluid ounces measure volume, while ounces can also describe weight.

Mistake: Leaving US customary selected when the recipe identifies a UK recipe cup or a 250 mL cup.
Fix: Check Cups and then recalculate. Choose the stated cup standard before calculating because the same number of cups can hold different volumes.

Mistake: Treating the pint result as an Imperial or dry-pint amount.
Fix: Check Cups and then recalculate. The calculator always reports US liquid pints. The selected cup standard only defines the original cup volume.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • The main answer is always in US liquid pints, including when the original cups are UK recipe cups or 250 mL recipe cups.
  • Use US customary unless the recipe, measuring tool, package, or source specifically identifies another cup standard. The calculator does not guess the standard from the amount entered.
  • This is a liquid-volume conversion. Dry-pint containers, package sizes, and ounces by weight may use a different measurement context.
  • The calculation keeps the entered quantity before display rounding. A recipe may use rounded kitchen measures, so its printed conversion can differ slightly.
  • Enter one nonnegative cup quantity. Ranges, formulas, unrelated unit suffixes, malformed comma groupings, and non-finite numbers cannot be converted.

Methodology

Conversion method

The calculator assigns a milliliter volume to each entered cup based on the selected cup standard. It converts that total volume to US liquid pints, then calculates the related US fluid-ounce, quart, and gallon amounts. For US customary cups, the rule is 2 cups per US pint. NIST lists 2 cups, 1 pint, and 16 fluid ounces as equivalent cooking measures. [1]

source_volume_ml = cups * selected_cup_ml

us_pints = source_volume_ml / 473.176473

us_fluid_ounces = source_volume_ml / 29.5735295625

us_quarts = us_pints / 2

us_gallons = us_pints / 8

Worked example

For 1.5 US customary cups, divide by 2: 1.5 / 2 = 0.75 US pints. That same volume is 12 US fluid ounces, 0.375 US quarts, and 0.09375 US gallons.

Selected cup volumes

A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL. The UK recipe-cup choice is 10 Imperial fluid ounces, or 284.130625 mL. The 250 mL choice is exactly 250 mL. The US and Imperial conversion values use NIST conversion factors.
