How to use our Final Grade Calculator

  1. Choose What do you know? and pick the option that matches your situation.
  2. If you already know your grade, enter Current course grade (%), Target course grade (%), and Final exam weight (%). If you do not know your current grade, enter Completed coursework weight (%), Completed coursework average (%), Target course grade (%), and Final exam weight (%).
  3. Optionally enter Expected final exam score (%) if you want to see your projected overall grade and your gap from the target.
  4. Click Calculate, then read Score needed on the final exam first and check Can you still reach that target? for the plain-language result.
  5. Sanity-check the setup by making sure the weight values match your class plan, especially whether Completed coursework weight (%) is about 100 minus Final exam weight (%).

Definitions

Current course grade (%): Your class grade before the final exam is added.

Target course grade (%): The overall class grade you want after the final exam counts.

Final exam weight (%): The part of the whole course grade that comes from the final exam.

Completed coursework weight (%): The part of the course already graded before the final exam.

Completed coursework average (%): Your average on the work already graded.

Score needed on the final exam: The exam percent required to finish with your target course grade.

Gap from target after your expected final: The projected overall grade minus your target, measured in percentage points.

Percentage points: A direct difference between two percentages, such as 86% minus 90% equals negative 4 percentage points.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering a portal grade in Current course grade (%) even though the portal already includes the final exam estimate.
Fix: Use the grade from before the final, or switch to Completed coursework average (%) if that better matches your class setup.

Mistake: Typing 0 in Final exam weight (%) when the final does not count much.
Fix: Enter the real percent from your syllabus. If Final exam weight (%) is 0, the calculator cannot solve for a needed final score.

Mistake: Mixing up Completed coursework weight (%) and Completed coursework average (%) in build mode.
Fix: Put the course share in Completed coursework weight (%) and your grade on that work in Completed coursework average (%) .

Mistake: Thinking a Score needed on the final exam above 100% is a calculator error.
Fix: Read Can you still reach that target? . A value above 100% usually means you would need extra credit or a class policy that allows grades above 100.

Mistake: Assuming a negative Gap from target after your expected final is bad input data.
Fix: The sign matters. Negative means your projected grade is below the target, and positive means you are above it.

Mistake: Leaving Expected final exam score (%) blank and expecting a projected result anyway.
Fix: Enter a score in Expected final exam score (%) if you want to see Projected overall grade from your expected final and the target gap.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator assumes your course uses a weighted average with the final exam counting as Final exam weight (%).
  • It treats all values as percentages on a percent scale. Real classes may round grades, curve exams, or use points instead of exact percentages.
  • If Completed coursework weight (%) does not match about 100 minus Final exam weight (%), the math can still run, but the setup may not match your syllabus.
  • A result above 100% for Score needed on the final exam means the target is not reachable on a normal 0 to 100 exam scale unless extra credit or special rules apply.
  • A result below 0% means the target is already secured mathematically, but your teacher may still apply minimum exam rules or attendance rules.
  • If your school uses letter bands, dropped assignments, category caps, or nonstandard weighting, your actual posted grade can differ from this estimate.

Methodology

How the calculator works

The calculator uses a weighted-average model. That means your overall course grade is built from the already-completed part of the course plus the final exam part.

final weight as a decimal = Final exam weight (%) / 100

needed final score = (Target course grade (%) - Current course grade (%) x (1 - final weight as a decimal)) / final weight as a decimal

If you choose the mode where you do not know your current grade yet, the calculator uses the entered Completed coursework average (%) as the current grade for the weighted-final calculation.

current grade used = Completed coursework average (%)

If you also enter an expected final exam score, the calculator estimates your finished course grade and compares it with your target.

projected overall grade = Current course grade (%) x (1 - final weight as a decimal) + Expected final exam score (%) x final weight as a decimal

gap from target = projected overall grade - Target course grade (%)

Feasibility meaning

If the needed final score is from 0% to 100%, the target is labeled reachable. If it is above 100%, the calculator labels it as needing extra credit. If it is below 0%, the calculator labels it as already secured because even a zero would still leave you at or above the target.

Mini example

Suppose your Current course grade (%) is 85, your Target course grade (%) is 90, and your Final exam weight (%) is 20. Convert 20% to 0.20, then plug it into the formula.

needed final score = (90 - 85 x (1 - 0.20)) / 0.20

needed final score = (90 - 68) / 0.20 = 110

So you would need 110% on the final, which means the target is not reachable on a normal 0 to 100 scale unless extra credit is available.

Assumptions used

The method assumes the final exam weight is greater than 0 and not more than 100, required percent fields are real numbers, and hidden mode inputs are not used in the calculation. Actual class systems can differ because of rounding, curving, bonus points, or syllabus rules.
