Definitions

Inch (in): A length unit. One foot contains 12 inches.

Foot (ft): A length unit equal to 12 inches.

Decimal feet: Feet written with a decimal part. For example, 5.5 ft equals 5 ft 6 in.

Mixed fraction: A whole number and a fraction written together, such as 72 1/2.

Remaining inches: The inches left after all complete 12-inch feet are counted.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Entering 5.5 when the original measurement is 5 ft 5 in.
Fix: Check Inches (in) and then recalculate. Enter the total inches. Convert 5 ft 5 in to 65 in before using this converter.

Mistake: Reading 5.5 ft as 5 ft 5 in.
Fix: Check Inches (in) and then recalculate. Decimal feet and feet-and-inches are different forms. 5.5 ft equals 5 ft 6 in.

Mistake: Typing a fraction with a zero denominator, such as 3 1/0.
Fix: Check Inches (in) and then recalculate. Use a denominator greater than 0, such as 3 1/2.

Mistake: Using commas incorrectly, such as 1,01.
Fix: Check Inches (in) and then recalculate. Use commas only for thousands, such as 1,200. Use a decimal point for decimals.

Mistake: Copying a heavily rounded feet value into another calculation.
Fix: Check Inches (in) and then recalculate. Choose more result decimal places before copying the value into a drawing, spreadsheet, or formula.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This converter is for nonnegative length measurements. Negative entries are rejected.
  • Enter one complete inch measurement as a whole number, decimal, simple fraction, or mixed fraction. Ranges, formulas, and multiple measurements in one entry are not accepted.
  • The feet-and-inches form is calculated from the original inch measurement, not from the rounded Feet (ft) display.
  • Result decimal places changes displayed rounding only and does not change the conversion.
  • A very small nonzero measurement may display as 0 at low precision even though its unrounded feet value is not zero.

Methodology

Conversion method

One foot contains 12 inches. After the converter reads the complete inch measurement, it divides inches by 12 to find decimal feet.

feet_decimal = inches / 12

It counts complete feet from the unrounded result, then finds the leftover inches from the original measurement.

whole_feet = feet_decimal - (feet_decimal % 1)

remaining_inches = inches - whole_feet * 12

In the complete-feet formula, % finds the fractional part after complete feet are removed.

Worked example

For 66.5 in, dividing by 12 gives 5.541666... ft. There are 5 complete feet, and 66.5 - (5 x 12) leaves 6.5 in, so the mixed measurement is 5 ft 6.5 in. With 3 decimal places selected, the displayed decimal answer is 5.542 ft.
