Gallon Calculator

Convert gallons and other volume units fast, with the US vs Imperial gallon choice made clear before you calculate.

Enter the volume you want to convert. Decimals are allowed.
Pick the unit for the amount you entered.
Pick the unit you want in the answer.
Tip: If you are not sure which gallon you mean, pick US gallon for milk and gas in the US, and Imperial gallon for most UK uses.
Choose how many digits to show in the result.

How to use our Gallon Calculator

  1. Enter your volume in Amount.
  2. Choose the starting unit under Convert from and the answer unit under Convert to.
  3. Pick Round to (decimal places) if you want more or fewer digits shown.
  4. Click Calculate, then read Converted amount first and use Gallon type note to make sure you used the right gallon system.
  5. Use Same amount in familiar units as a quick sense check, especially if you are comparing liquid amounts you know from cups, pints, or quarts.

Definitions

US gallon: A US liquid volume unit equal to 3.785411784 liters and 231 cubic inches [1].

Imperial gallon: A larger gallon used in the UK system, equal to 4.54609 liters [1].

Liter: A metric volume unit used as the common base for all conversions in this calculator.

Milliliter: One-thousandth of a liter, often written as mL.

US liquid quart: One-fourth of a US gallon.

US liquid pint: One-half of a US liquid quart, or one-eighth of a US gallon.

US customary cup: One-sixteenth of a US gallon, commonly used in cooking [2].

US fluid ounce: One one-hundred-twenty-eighth of a US gallon.

Cubic foot: A volume unit for larger spaces and containers, equal to 28.316846592 liters [1].

Converted amount: The main answer in the exact unit you picked under Convert to.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Mistake: Picking the wrong option in Convert from , especially confusing US gallon with Imperial gallon .
Fix: Check Gallon type note after calculating. If it names the wrong gallon system, change Convert from and recalculate.

Mistake: Typing a value into Amount that is blank, not a number, or less than 0.
Fix: Enter a real number 0 or greater in Amount , such as 1, 2.5, or 128.

Mistake: Expecting a different unit than the one chosen in Convert to .
Fix: Read the Convert to selection before using Converted amount . The answer is always shown in that exact target unit.

Mistake: Thinking Same amount in familiar units is the main answer.
Fix: Use Converted amount as the official conversion. Treat Same amount in familiar units as a quick US household check only.

Mistake: Setting Round to (decimal places) too low and assuming the rounded display is the exact value.
Fix: Increase Round to (decimal places) to 4, 5, or 6 when small differences matter.

Mistake: Assuming nothing changed when Convert from and Convert to are the same unit.
Fix: That is expected. The Conversion sentence will show the amount unchanged because no unit change was needed.

Limitations & Key Assumptions / Boundary Conditions

  • This calculator converts volume only. It does not estimate weight, price, fuel economy, or shipping needs.
  • US gallon and Imperial gallon are different sizes. A wrong gallon choice will give a wrong answer even when the number entered is correct.
  • The household check uses US liquid quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces only, even if your main conversion uses liters or Imperial gallons.
  • Rounding changes only how the answer is displayed, not the internal conversion math.
  • Very tiny amounts may make the household check look like all zeros at low decimal settings. Increase decimal places if you need more detail.
  • The tool requires a finite value that is 0 or more for Amount.

Methodology

How the conversion works

The calculator first converts your entry to liters, then converts from liters to the target unit. Using one common base keeps every supported unit consistent.

target_value = input_value * liters_per_from_unit / liters_per_to_unit

Examples of constants used here include 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L, 1 cubic foot = 28.316846592 L, and 1 milliliter = 0.001 L [1].

Household breakdown

For a quick sense check, the calculator also expresses the same volume in familiar US liquid units.

us_quarts = liters / 0.946352946

us_pints = liters / 0.473176473

us_cups = liters / 0.2365882365

us_fl_oz = liters / 0.0295735295625

These are shown as a reference only, not as a replacement for the selected target unit. Common household relationships like cups, pints, and quarts are part of standard home-use measuring language [2].

Mini example

If Amount is 1, Convert from is US gallon, and Convert to is Liter, the math is:

target_value = 1 * 3.785411784 / 1 = 3.785411784

If Round to (decimal places) is 3, the displayed Converted amount becomes 3.785 liters.

Assumptions used

The calculator assumes standard fixed unit definitions. It does not adjust for temperature, material, container shape, or any real-world measuring error. If you choose the same source and target unit, the numeric amount stays the same because no unit change is needed.
